The Padres hoped that Juan Soto would be added to their team, which could help them win the World Series. It’s difficult to say that this likely puts them out of the conversation, but it’s certain going to be harder than before.
Preller had the following to say, according to ESPN:
âHeâs somebody that from the organizationâs standpoint weâve invested time and money into,â Preller told reporters. âWhen heâs on the field, heâs a difference-maker. You have to learn from the situations. We were hoping that from the offseason to now that there would be some maturity, and obviously with the news today, itâs more of a pattern and itâs something that weâve got to dig a bit more into. ⌠Iâm sure heâs very disappointed. But at the end of the day, itâs one thing to say it. Youâve got to start showing by your actions.â
Preller added: âI think what we need to get to is a point in time we trust [him]. Over the last six or seven months, thatâs been something we havenât been able to have there.
âI think from our standpoint. Obviously, heâs a great talent, heâs a guy we have a lot of history with and do believe in, but these things only work when thereâs trust both ways.â
The Padres will have to figure this out with Fernando Tatis. Heâs one of the best baseball players and will be vital to San Diegoâs success in the coming decade.
