WWE SummerSlam 2026 Night 2 Recap: Roman Reigns Conquers Seth Rollins as Three New Champions Are Crowned

WWE SummerSlam 2026 concluded Sunday, August 2, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis with a memorable second night featuring three championship changes, Kevin Owens’ emotional return and a dramatic final chapter between former Shield brothers Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.

Kevin Owens Returns and Earns a WWE Championship Opportunity

Result: Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and Gunther

Night 2 began with a major surprise. The scheduled No. 1 contender’s match between Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor became a Fatal 4-Way when SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis added Gunther and the returning Kevin Owens.

Owens received an emotional welcome after spending approximately 17 months away from competition because of a serious neck injury. He showed little ring rust, attacking all three opponents before exchanging blows with longtime friend and rival Sami Zayn.

Lil Yachty attempted to help Williams by striking Corbin with the Trick Stick while the referee was distracted. However, the interference eventually backfired when Williams accidentally knocked Yachty through a table at ringside.

Corbin took advantage by striking Williams with the championship and connecting with End of Days to capture the United States title.

The controversial finish gives Williams a reason to demand another match while potentially creating tension between the former champion and Yachty.

Chelsea Green Wins the Interim WWE Women’s Championship

Result: Chelsea Green defeated Charlotte Flair, Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend

Five of WWE’s leading women competed in a dangerous Ladder Match necessitated by Rhea Ripley’s injury.

The match included several major collisions. Lash Legend powerbombed Tiffany Stratton onto a ladder, while Jade Cargill delivered Jaded to Chelsea Green on another ladder. B-Fab and Michin later interfered by attacking Green and helping Cargill.

Green appeared to be finished after becoming trapped upside down in the ladder. However, Charlotte Flair and Cargill knocked each other down while fighting for the championship. Green recovered, climbed the remaining rungs and retrieved the title to become Interim WWE Women’s Champion.

Danhausen Defeats Dominik Mysterio

Danhausen and Dominik Mysterio competed in the unusual Human Monies on a Pole Match, with the winner required to retrieve a sack of money suspended above the ring.

JD McDonagh interfered on Mysterio’s behalf, but the Minihausens arrived to even the numbers. Joe Hendry then appeared and struck McDonagh with a guitar.

Danhausen used his curse to stop Mysterio, climbed the pole and recovered the money. He celebrated by distributing some of it to fans around ringside.

The match provided a comedic break between the evening’s more serious championship contests while continuing Mysterio’s problems with Hendry and Danhausen.

Chad Gable Wins His First WWE Singles Championship

Result: Chad Gable defeated Penta

Chad Gable received one of the night’s most emotional victories by defeating Penta for the Intercontinental Championship in his hometown of Minneapolis.

Penta repeatedly targeted Gable’s injured shoulder and connected with a Mexican Destroyer on the ring apron. When Penta attempted another Destroyer, Gable countered and applied the Ankle Lock.

Penta had no choice but to submit, giving Gable the first singles championship of his WWE career. Gable then celebrated inside the ring with his family and thanked the hometown audience.

After years of working through American Alpha, Shorty G, Alpha Academy, American Made and his El Grande Americano identity, Gable finally received his defining singles moment.

Roman Reigns Finally Defeats Seth Rollins

Result: Roman Reigns defeated Seth Rollins to retain the World Heavyweight Championship

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins closed SummerSlam with a deeply personal World Heavyweight Championship match built around their shared history in The Shield.

The fight extended into the crowd and around the announce area. Reigns powerbombed Rollins through one table, while Rollins later returned the favor. Both men barely avoided being counted out.

Rollins survived a Spear, while Reigns kicked out after absorbing a Buckle Bomb and a Stomp. The two also honored their former Shield teammate by incorporating a Wacky Line and Dirty Deeds into the match.

When Reigns accidentally Speared the referee, both competitors considered using a steel chair—the weapon associated with Rollins’ infamous betrayal of The Shield. Reigns ultimately threw his chair away and continued fighting without it.

Rollins connected with another Stomp but missed an attempted version from the top rope. Reigns responded with three consecutive Spears to defeat Rollins cleanly and retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

Afterward, Reigns extended his fist to Rollins. Following a moment of hesitation, Rollins joined him in performing The Shield’s signature fist bump as the Minneapolis crowd erupted. The scene symbolically closed one of the longest and most important rivalries of their careers.

SummerSlam Night 2 delivered more significant changes than the opening night. Baron Corbin, Chelsea Green and Chad Gable left Minneapolis with championships, while Kevin Owens returned and immediately became the No. 1 contender to CM Punk’s title.

Gable’s hometown championship victory was the night’s most emotional result, and Green’s unlikely Ladder Match triumph produced one of the loudest celebrations. Owens’ comeback created an exciting new main-event rivalry.

However, the evening belonged to Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. Their main event combined physical action, dramatic near-falls and more than a decade of Shield history. Reigns finally secured the decisive victory, while the post-match fist bump gave their rivalry a fitting conclusion.
