The 2024 season is upon us, and today, we will examine the top ten quarterbacks entering the season. The list doesn’t look as impressive as it did entering last season, but that may make it more interesting than last season.
Fifita was one of the nation’s hottest quarterbacks at the end of last season, leading the Arizona Wildcats to seven straight victories and averaging 349.3 passing yards per game while throwing 14 touchdowns against only three interceptions over their final five games. Leading receiver Tetairoa Millan returned this season too, so Fifita should maintain an effective down-field throwing presence under new coach Brent Brennan; Fifita went 5-2 as a starter against ranked opponents last season.
Howard was 14-11 as a starter at Kansas State and transferred to Ohio State, where he will have one of the strongest supporting casts. TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins from Ole Miss will help, along with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and receivers Emeka Egbuka and five-star freshman Jemiah Smith in his receiver room. Howard must still defeat Devin Brown for the starting spot during fall camp but otherwise looks set up to lead Ohio State on another national title run.
Dart is 18-7 as a starting quarterback for Ole Miss over his two seasons as the starter, and in 2023 saw an improvement in both passing totals and running game effectiveness with eight touchdowns on 19 runs of 10 yards or more, according to PFF statistics. Dart had a 16.1% completion rate on passes 20 yards or longer with four touchdowns and three interceptions – something which needs improvement to attract next-level attention; leading Ole Miss into a CFP bid would further elevate Dart’s stock.
Ward began his career at Incarnate Word in 2020 before going to Washington State for the last two seasons and has become one of the nation’s top FBS quarterbacks since. Ward had an outstanding 2023 with 130th ranked rushing attack for WSU. Ward transferred to Miami this off-season, where their 12-13 record over the last two seasons could make the leap into ACC contention and give Ward an opportunity to reach this lofty rank of first-round selection status. Ward will be involved in one of the top non-conference games of the year.
Sanders made an impactful debut for Colorado under Coach Prime and was among the September favorites for the Heisman Trophy. Sanders demonstrated natural talent, yet took 52 sacks and had the worst rushing attack in FBS; if these factors improved, then Sanders may remain one of the leading candidates for being selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. In fourth-quarter action alone last season, Sanders completed 72.8% of completions at a 207.1 efficiency rating while throwing 11 touchdown passes without an interception; further evidence that Sanders can thrive under high visibility conditions – can he lead Colorado into the bowl game? The issue is holding onto the ball too long.
If Daniels can stay healthy throughout a full season the Jayhawks could challenge in the Big 12. In 12 games over two seasons, he accumulated 2,719 passing yards with 23 TDs and five interceptions, along with 499 rushing yards and seven scores (68.2% completion percentage). Daniels will keep Kansas in contention for Big 12 championship games under head coach Lance Leipold and new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes; should everything come together at once, becoming a Heisman finalist is possible.
Gabriel ranks highest on this list of first-year transfer quarterbacks. Over his past two seasons at UCF and Oklahoma, he averaged 3,276 passing yards with 55 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, as well as 350 rushing yards per season and nine TDs. Now, at Oregon, where his offense averaged 44.2 points per game last season He also shares Hawaii connections with Oregon Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota!
Milroe took some time to assert himself as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, but once he did, he led Alabama to an SEC title run. Milroe led all returning Power 4 quarterbacks with a 172.7 passer efficiency rating while amassing 531 yards and 12 touchdowns – bypassing the NFL Draft was good! His success fit in perfectly with coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan; should Milroe improve his intermediate-range passing (where he hit 52.3% last season), another SEC championship run could ensue! Bama will be in one of the most anticipated non-conference games in 2024!
Beck led all returning FBS quarterbacks with 3,941 passing yards last season. His 72.3% completion percentage on throws of less than 20 yards and five games with 300+ passing yards are unrivalled in FBS quarterbacking. Georgia may offer favorable conditions, but Beck averaged 282.2 passing yards against ranked teams on average with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions during six starts against them. Although his receivers will change significantly without tight end Brock Bowers or Ladd McConkey, Beck is poised for a national championship run and first-round selection!
Ewers led Texas to the College Football Playoff this past season and had an outstanding performance of 349 yards and three TDs against Alabama (34-24). Ewers improved significantly from his inaugural year as Texas starter; especially impressive were his results during the second halves of games – where his completion percentage rose from 61% to 76% and passer rating reached 179%, with 11 touchdowns without interceptions; the final step is consistency in deep passing game where 32 of 99 (32.3%) deep pass attempts resulted in seven touchdowns against three interceptions last season. Being more consistent with his arm strength and remaining in school will increase his chances of becoming one of the top ten picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
