10) Eddie George — Ohio State Buckeyes

Across the 1994 and 1995 seasons, George averaged over 300 carries per year, producing more than 1,500 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns annually in a Big Ten era defined by physical defenses. At 6’3” and over 235 pounds, he punished tacklers while still possessing enough agility to break long runs. Ohio State’s offense revolved entirely around him, and defenses knew it — yet they still couldn’t stop him.

The lone blemish on George’s college résumé is postseason success. The Buckeyes went 0–3 in bowl games during his tenure, often running into elite national competition. Still, George’s individual dominance, awards haul, and physical impact earn him a deserved place in the Big Ten’s top ten.

9) Anthony Thompson — Indiana Hoosiers

Anthony Thompson stands as the gold standard of Indiana football and one of the most underappreciated running backs in college football history. In 1989, Thompson finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, but he captured the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and Big Ten Player of the Year honors while becoming a unanimous All-American.

Thompson was more than just a high-volume runner. He was explosive, patient, and versatile, capable of grinding between the tackles or breaking off long touchdown runs. At the time of his graduation, Thompson held numerous Indiana and Big Ten records, many of which stood for decades. His presence elevated Indiana football into rare national relevance during the late 1980s.

What makes Thompson’s résumé especially impressive is the lack of surrounding elite talent compared to other players on this list. Defenses keyed on him every week, yet he still delivered elite production. His impact on Indiana football cannot be overstated, and his legacy continues to define what greatness looks like in Bloomington.

8) Melvin Gordon — Wisconsin Badgers

Melvin Gordon’s 2014 season remains one of the most explosive individual performances in college football history. Gordon rushed for 2,587 yards and 29 touchdowns, finishing just 41 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ legendary single-season record. He won the Doak Walker Award and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, cementing his place among the greats.

Gordon combined elite speed with Wisconsin’s trademark downhill rushing attack, creating a terrifying blend of power and breakaway ability. His 408-yard performance against Nebraska showcased his ability to flip a game instantly. Over his career, Gordon amassed 4,915 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns despite playing only three seasons.

While Gordon lacked the longevity of some backs above him, his peak was as high as anyone in conference history. Few players have ever stressed defenses the way Gordon did, and his ability to score from anywhere on the field makes him one of the most dangerous backs the Big Ten has ever produced.

7) Mike Hart — Michigan Wolverines

Mike Hart embodied consistency, toughness, and reliability during his Michigan career. One of the few Big Ten backs to surpass 5,000 rushing yards, Hart set Michigan’s freshman rushing record with 1,455 yards in 2004 and followed it with three more 1,000-yard seasons.

Hart finished his career as Michigan’s all-time leader in rushing yards (5,040), carries (1,015), and games with 100+ rushing yards (28). Despite lacking elite breakaway speed, Hart’s vision, balance, and football intelligence allowed him to maximize every carry. He was also a dependable receiver and blocker, making him a true every-down back.

6) Larry Johnson — Penn State Nittany Lions

Larry Johnson’s 2002 season is one of the greatest single seasons by a running back in college football history. Johnson rushed for 2,087 yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging an absurd 7.7 yards per carry while earning consensus All-American honors along with the Doak Walker, Maxwell, and Walter Camp Awards.

Though Johnson only served as Penn State’s primary back for one season, his dominance was unmatched. His blend of size, power, and speed overwhelmed defenses, and he routinely turned short gains into long touchdowns. Johnson finished third in Heisman voting, despite playing in an offense that relied almost exclusively on his production.

Longevity is the only reason Johnson isn’t ranked higher. However, when evaluating peak dominance, very few Big Ten backs can rival his 2002 campaign.

5) Alan Ameche — Wisconsin Badgers

Alan “The Horse” Ameche represents the early foundation of Big Ten running back excellence. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1954 — the first Big Ten player to do so after the conference officially adopted its modern name.

Ameche finished his career as the NCAA’s all-time rushing leader and powered Wisconsin to four consecutive top-15 finishes in the AP poll. His performance in the 1953 Rose Bowl (133 rushing yards in a 7–0 loss) was legendary, even in defeat.

4) Saquon Barkley — Penn State Nittany Lions

Saquon Barkley redefined what a modern Big Ten running back could be. During his Penn State career, Barkley rushed for 3,843 yards and 43 touchdowns, adding eight receiving touchdowns and over 1,000 yards through the air.

Barkley’s explosiveness, versatility, and strength made him a nightmare matchup. He was a central figure in Penn State’s 2016 Big Ten Championship run and consistently delivered in high-leverage moments. Few players in conference history were as capable of flipping a game instantly.

3) Ron Dayne — Wisconsin Badgers

Ron Dayne remains the benchmark for Big Ten power backs. He finished his career with over 7,000 rushing yards on more than 1,200 carries, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1999 along with nearly every major national award.

Dayne’s bruising style wore down defenses over four seasons, culminating in Rose Bowl victories in both 1999 and 2000. He was the centerpiece of Wisconsin’s rise to national prominence and remains one of the most feared runners in college football history.

2) Jonathan Taylor — Wisconsin Badgers

Jonathan Taylor’s production defies belief. He rushed for over 6,000 yards in just three seasons, averaging more than 2,000 yards per year while scoring 55 touchdowns and maintaining a stunning 6.7 yards per carry.

1) Archie Griffin — Ohio State Buckeyes

Archie Griffin stands alone in college football history as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. From 1973–75, Griffin was the engine of Ohio State football, earning unanimous All-American honors twice and capturing the Walter Camp and Maxwell Awards.

Griffin’s greatness wasn’t about flash — it was about consistency, leadership, and reliability. He rushed for over 1,600 yards in back-to-back seasons and carried Ohio State to four Big Ten titles and four Rose Bowl appearances.
