Today, we will examine the top defenses entering the 2024 NFL season. Of course, this is all conjecture. These ratings are based on last year’s results, including the players lost and added to the rosters in the off-season.
Matt Eberflus held on to his job this offseason due to what the Chicago Bears defense accomplished in the second half of 2023. From Weeks 10-18, Chicago opponents averaged only 70.5 QB ratings with an 11-16 touchdown-INT ratio and an impressive 6.5 yards per attempt from Week 10-18; furthermore, they held opponents to an average of 93.9 rushing yards per game with four scores over an eight-game stretch; passing rush was somewhat of an issue but linebacker talent and scheme shined brightest among the top NFL defenses this time.
Heading into 2023, the Detroit Lions held the promise of developing into an effective defense, but this goal remained hypothetical. Their weak secondary was responsible for them finishing 25th in scoring defense; 7.4 yards per pass (30th), run defense was effective (3.8 yards per carry) and they led in pressure percentage.
This year’s secondary will look very different. They acquired Carlton Davis through trade and Amik Robertson through free agency before drafting Terrion Arnold in April. Combine those players with Brian Branch, who enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, and add Marcus Davenport, who will bring an effective pass rush, and you have all of the makings for an elite group of defenders.
Baltimore Ravens defense was one of the top performers during most of the 2023 season; however, offseason losses raise some significant concerns. Though defensive coordinator Zach Orr has generated some buzz among Ravens fans, at just 32 years old it remains to be seen if his acumen matches up to Mike Macdonald in terms of defensive acumen.
Baltimore suffered significant personnel losses this summer, losing star linebacker Patrick Queen to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jadeveon Clowney to the Carolina Panthers and defensive backs Geno Stone, Rock Ya-Sin and Ronald Darby all moving on. Although Baltimore excels at player development and may still end up as one of the top-10 defenses this fall due to these losses and the absence of a top pass rusher
The San Francisco 49ers defense had some real problems stopping the run last season. In the NFL playoffs, opponents averaged 5.1 yards per carry and 149.3 rushing yards per game against San Francisco. It aligned with the numbers (126.8 rush ypg, 4.8 ypc allowed) in the teamβs final four regular-season games.
Fortunately for San Francisco, its pass rush should be more consistent in 2024 after becoming a big problem this past year. Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos now support Nick Bosa. The big question, beyond the 49ers’ run defense, is how long San Francisco has to play without linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
We’re investing heavily in the 2024 version of the Houston Texan’s defense under DeMeco Ryans. Last season, Houston limited opponents to 90.1 rushing yards per game with an impressive average carry of just 3.3 yards per carry and a 30.8 percent third-down success rate by Week 5. Now in his second season as edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. moves onto opposing side Danielle Hunter with Denico Autry inside as support players.
Houston addressed its linebacking needs with Azeez Al-Shaair, who knows Ryan’s system well and excels as a run defender. Additionally, it’s secondary added more depth with Jeff Okudah (a free agent) and Kamari Lassiter (NFL Draft). With these upgrades, Houston could potentially boast one of the NFL’s premier defenses next season.
Alex Highsmith, T.J. Watt, and Cam Heyward together create an intimidating pass rush for any opponent to face off against. Keeanue Benton further compounded offensive linemen’s woes as an interior pass rusher in 2023; now, Pittsburgh has upgraded its linebacking group by signing Patrick Queen as a linebacker. Even if his performance falls short of All-Pro status, it still marks an enormous step forward for their defense.
At cornerback, Joey Porter Jr. appears ready to become Pittsburgh’s No. 1 cornerback. Donte Jackson may not inspire as much trust at his opposite position on the boundary line, but he should be at least average. Durability issues should remain minimal within this group, making the Steelers one of the 10 best NFL defenses in 2024.
On the one hand, we have genuine concerns over how the Kansas City Chiefs secondary will function without L’Jarius Sneed. He wasn’t always great in coverage or penalties but often delivered when lined up against No. 1 receivers – making Trent McDuffie less useful for that role than previously. How does this Chiefs dynasty compare to the dynasties of the 70s and 80s.
Kansas City has already proven its ability to adapt after losing cornerback Charvarius Ward, quickly replacing him with Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson. Furthermore, Steve Spagnuolo remains one of the premier defensive minds in football and will keep wreaking havoc, with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis each on track for double-digit sacks this year. If Felix Anudike-Uzomah makes an outstanding second-year leap while another top perimeter corner emerges, Kansas City could become one of the most robust defenses this season.
Dan Quinn was a very good defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, turning around an awful unit coordinated by Mike Nolan. However, we also saw plenty of instances where the Cowboys’ defense was exposed by great opponents, often in the same areas that Quinn never found a way to stop.
Mike Zimmer is arguably an even better defensive coordinator, and he brings more to the table strategically. Plus, Dallas is getting back cornerback Trevon Diggs after he suffered an ACL tear in 2023. What holds Dallas back in our NFL defense rankings is an inability to stop the run and the glaring hole at off-ball linebacker. The sacks and takeaways will make this one of the best NFL defenses in 2024, but issues defending the run and routinely being attacked over the middle of the field will be two issues they have to improve on.
The New York Jets should boast one of the top NFL defenses in 2024. Losing Bryce Huff is undoubtedly a blow, but Jermaine Johnson showed significant progress last season, while Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed’s cornerback pairing will make creating pressure easier for the defensive line. A unit which allowed only the second-lowest yards per play (4.6) last season should become even stronger this fall with Aaron Rodgers back healthy, putting pressure on defenses more frequently; furthermore, New York replaced Josh Sweat with Hasson Reddick, who should feast upon opponents with the help surrounding him!
The Cleveland Browns put back together their team. For several months during 2023, Cleveland had one of the best NFL defenses, holding opponents to 55.6 per cent completion rates and 73.2 QB ratings with 34 sacks and a 10-9 TD-INT rate in their first 12 weeksβuntil Myles Garrett suffered a shoulder injury.
A healthy version of this unit could become one of the best NFL defenses in 2024, mainly once more familiarity with Jim Schwartz’s scheme has been gained. Again, Garrett will demonstrate why he is a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate, while another year under Schwartz should lead to team-wide improvements. The Browns are a contender to win Super Bowl 59!
