2026 ATP Cincinnati Open Update: Djokovic and Shelton Stunned, Zverev Takes Control and 4 Betting Prop Bets

MASON, OH (August 17, 2026) — The 2026 Cincinnati Open has already produced major upsets, injury concerns and an increasingly wide-open race for the final ATP Masters 1000 championship before the US Open.

Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton are gone. João Fonseca has withdrawn because of injury. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev has strengthened his position as the player to beat, Thiago Agustín Tirante has become the tournament’s breakout story, and several young contenders are suddenly looking at realistic paths toward the championship.

The Cincinnati Open runs through Sunday, August 23, with the men’s singles champion earning $1,151,380 and 1,000 ATP ranking points.

This update reflects completed ATP singles results through late Monday, August 17. Odds are subject to change.

Biggest Winners

Thiago Agustín Tirante — The Story of the Tournament

No player has improved his stock more than Thiago Agustín Tirante.

Tirante produced the men’s tournament’s biggest upset when he rallied to defeat Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic controlled the opening set but began struggling physically in Cincinnati’s humid conditions. Tirante stayed composed, earned the decisive break late in the third set and recorded the biggest victory of his career.

Rather than suffering the emotional letdown that sometimes follows a monumental upset, Tirante backed it up Monday by beating Martin Landaluce 7-6(5), 7-6(4) to reach the Round of 16.

That follow-up victory may be almost as important as the Djokovic upset. Tirante has proven this is becoming a legitimate tournament run rather than one great afternoon.

Stock: Surging

Jaime Faria — Breakthrough Top-10 Victory

Qualifier Jaime Faria delivered another massive upset by defeating recently crowned Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-4.

Faria entered Cincinnati ranked outside the game’s elite but earned the first Top-10 victory of his career while ending Shelton’s six-match winning streak. Even more impressive, Faria fell behind 1-4 in the second set before winning five consecutive games. Shelton converted only one of 12 break-point opportunities.

Faria now faces Adam Walton with an opportunity to turn his first Top-10 victory into a Masters 1000 Round-of-16 appearance.

Stock: Way up

Alexander Zverev — Favorite Continues Moving Forward

Alexander Zverev has not been flawless, but the No. 1 seed remains alive while several of his biggest threats have disappeared.

After needing three sets to defeat Cameron Norrie, Zverev handled the dangerous Terence Atmane 7-6(4), 7-6(6) Monday to advance to the Round of 16.

That becomes increasingly important when considering what has happened around him. Djokovic and Shelton are eliminated, Fonseca has withdrawn, and several other seeds have been pushed hard.

Zverev does not need to dominate every match. In a tournament this chaotic, simply surviving and continuing to advance is enormously valuable.

Stock: Championship favorite

Rafael Jodar — Quietly Becoming a Serious Threat

Rafael Jodar continues to establish himself as one of the young players capable of making a deep run.

After surviving Denis Shapovalov in three sets earlier in the tournament, Jodar completely overwhelmed Alejandro Tabilo on Monday, winning 6-2, 6-1 in just 75 minutes.

Jodar entered Cincinnati after reaching the Canadian Open semifinals and has carried that momentum directly into Ohio.

With Djokovic removed from his portion of the draw, Jodar’s route has become considerably more interesting.

Stock: Legitimate dark horse

Alex de Minaur — Surviving and Advancing

Alex de Minaur has already been tested twice.

He recovered from losing the opening set 6-1 against Quentin Halys to win his second-round match and followed it by defeating Arthur Fery 7-5, 7-6(3) Monday.

De Minaur’s speed, defense and ability to force opponents into additional shots make him especially dangerous against players who are beginning to feel the effects of Cincinnati’s heat and humidity.

Stock: Steady contender

Biggest Losers

Novak Djokovic — Physical Problems Overshadow Cincinnati Return

The most significant disappointment has been Djokovic.

Playing his first match since Wimbledon, Djokovic looked comfortable while winning the first set against Tirante before his physical condition deteriorated dramatically.

Tirante eventually completed the 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 upset, handing the three-time Cincinnati champion an extremely early exit.

The defeat matters beyond Cincinnati because the US Open begins August 30. Djokovic’s ability to recover physically and handle long matches in potentially difficult New York conditions will now receive even more attention.

Stock: Major US Open question mark

Ben Shelton — Canadian Open High Followed by Cincinnati Crash

Few players entered Cincinnati hotter than Shelton.

He had just won his second consecutive Canadian Open championship, defeating Brandon Nakashima in the final without dropping a set during the tournament.

Then came Faria.

Shelton’s inability to convert break points proved devastating. He finished only 1-for-12 on break opportunities and watched a 4-1 second-set advantage disappear.

The physical and emotional turnaround from winning Canada and immediately beginning another Masters 1000 event may have played a role.

Stock: Disappointing exit, but not a major long-term concern

João Fonseca — Injury Ends Promising Run

Fonseca defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-6(2) and was scheduled to meet qualifier Christopher O’Connell in the third round.

Instead, Fonseca withdrew Monday after suffering a left abdominal injury, allowing O’Connell to advance without playing. The priority now becomes recovering ahead of the US Open.

It is particularly frustrating because Djokovic and Shelton’s exits had helped create opportunities throughout the draw.

Stock: Injury concern

Casper Ruud — Another Injury Exit

Casper Ruud’s tournament ended when he retired against Christopher O’Connell.

O’Connell won the first set 7-5 before Ruud retired with the second set at 2-1.

The result continued a tournament in which health, recovery and difficult summer conditions have become nearly as important as pure tennis ability.

Stefanos Tsitsipas — Another Missed Opportunity

Tsitsipas entered a depleted Cincinnati field with an opportunity to make a significant Masters 1000 run but was defeated by Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-5.

With Sinner and Alcaraz absent and other major contenders exiting early, this was exactly the type of draw Tsitsipas needed to capitalize on.

He could not.

Cincinnati Open Highlights

The tournament has already supplied several memorable moments.

Tirante defeating Djokovic is unquestionably No. 1. A player searching for the biggest victory of his career stared down one of the greatest players in tennis history and finished the job.

Faria defeating Shelton is not far behind. The qualifier didn’t simply take advantage of an exhausted opponent; he recovered from 1-4 down in the second set and won five consecutive games.

Jodar’s rise continues to be another major storyline. His 6-2, 6-1 demolition of Tabilo was one of Monday’s most convincing performances.

Finally, American depth remains substantial. Taylor Fritz, Learner Tien, Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima all reached the third round, although Tuesday’s Tien-Tiafoe matchup guarantees at least one more American elimination. Fritz opened his tournament by defeating Alex Michelsen 6-3, 6-4, while Tien and Tiafoe both advanced in straight sets.

Cincinnati Open Lowlights

The biggest lowlight has been the growing list of physical issues.

Djokovic struggled badly during his loss to Tirante, Fonseca withdrew because of an abdominal injury and Ruud retired during his match against O’Connell.

Weather has been another issue. Monday’s schedule endured multiple rain interruptions, adding another recovery challenge for players already competing in difficult August conditions.

Shelton’s 1-for-12 break-point conversion rate against Faria also qualifies as one of the tournament’s most frustrating statistical performances.

Updated Cincinnati Open Championship Odds

The futures market has changed dramatically because Djokovic and Shelton are gone and Fonseca has withdrawn.

A live exchange snapshot Monday made Alexander Zverev approximately a 28% championship probability and Taylor Fritz approximately 15%, putting them at roughly +260 and +570 American-odds equivalents before bookmaker margin.

Other live exchange prices placed Rafael Jodar around 10%, Felix Auger-Aliassime around 9%, Daniil Medvedev around 8% and Jakub Mensik around 7%, roughly equivalent to +900, +1010, +1150 and +1330 respectively.

Current Betting Pecket

  • Alexander Zverev: clear favorite
  • Taylor Fritz: leading American contender
  • Rafael Jodar: attractive emerging challenger
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime: dangerous in faster conditions
  • Daniil Medvedev: proven hard-court Masters pedigree
  • Jakub Mensik: high-upside long shot

These are rapidly changing futures prices rather than fixed recommendations, so bettors should always compare the current number before wagering.

FanDuel listed Fritz -135 to win in straight sets against Daniel Mérida.

Why the Bet Makes Sense

Fritz opened Cincinnati by beating Alex Michelsen 6-3, 6-4, an efficient performance in which he never needed a deciding set.

His serve is particularly valuable on Cincinnati’s hard courts. If Fritz protects his service games, Mérida will have very little room for error.

Fritz is also the much shorter moneyline favorite, with markets pricing him around -400 or shorter to win the match outright.

Why the Bet Could Lose

Mérida is improving quickly and enters with very little pressure.

The biggest risk is one poor Fritz service game or a tiebreak. Fritz could still comfortably win the match 2-1 and lose this wager.

Prediction: Fritz 6-4, 6-3

FanDuel posted Rublev 2-0 at +125.

Why the Bet Makes Sense

Rublev defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6(5), 6-1 in his Cincinnati opener and became increasingly dominant as the match progressed.

His aggressive first-strike tennis can take time away from Borges, and the +125 price provides considerably more upside than simply laying the moneyline.

Why the Bet Could Lose

Borges deserves respect after defeating Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-4.

Rublev also has periods in which his error count spikes. One loose service game could turn this into three sets.

Prediction: Rublev 7-5, 6-4

FanDuel posted the match total at 22.5 games, with the Over around -120 when checked.

Why the Bet Makes Sense

The moneyline itself demonstrates how closely matched these two Americans are. Current markets have placed Tien around -133 and Tiafoe around +116.

Tien beat Sebastian Baez 6-3, 7-6(4), while Tiafoe defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4.

A 7-6, 6-4 straight-set result already reaches 23 games. A three-set match would make the Over considerably easier to reach.

Why the Bet Could Lose

Tien’s court coverage could frustrate Tiafoe into errors, while Tiafoe possesses enough firepower to run away with a set if his serve and forehand are clicking.

Something like 6-3, 6-3 would kill the Over quickly.

Prediction: Tien 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Prop Bet No. 4 — Daniil Medvedev to Beat Brandon Nakashima 2-1

FanDuel listed Medvedev to win 2-1 at +300, compared with +185 for a straight-set Medvedev victory.

Why the Bet Makes Sense

This is much closer than the names alone might suggest.

Medvedev is only a modest favorite, around -128, while Nakashima has been listed around +106.

Nakashima defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-2, 7-5, while Medvedev handled Marco Trungelliti 6-4, 7-5.

Nakashima’s serve and clean ball striking make him capable of stealing one set, but Medvedev’s defense, return and experience give him the advantage if the match becomes a long three-set battle.

Why the Bet Could Lose

The +300 price exists for a reason.

Medvedev could simply win 2-0, particularly if Nakashima struggles to hold serve. Conversely, Nakashima is playing well enough to win the match outright.

This is the highest-risk wager of the four.

Prediction: Medvedev 6-7, 6-3, 6-3

Conclusion

The 2026 ATP Cincinnati Open has become exactly what the men’s tennis calendar needed one tournament before the US Open: unpredictable.

Novak Djokovic’s defeat blew open the top half of the draw. Ben Shelton’s stunning loss removed one of the hottest players in tennis. João Fonseca’s withdrawal eliminated another potential title threat.

Alexander Zverev is now in the strongest position, but calling Cincinnati predictable would be a mistake.

Thiago Agustín Tirante has already proven that rankings mean very little when a player finds confidence at a Masters 1000 event. Jaime Faria has done the same. Rafael Jodar continues to look increasingly comfortable against established ATP competition, while Fritz, Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime, de Minaur, Mensik, Musetti, Rublev, Tien and Tiafoe remain capable of changing the tournament with one big performance.

For bettors, that volatility creates opportunity but also danger. Fritz 2-0 and Rublev 2-0 offer the strongest combination of matchup advantage and price among Tuesday’s props, while Tien-Tiafoe Over 22.5 games may offer the best route for anyone expecting an extended all-American battle.

Cincinnati started with a wide-open men’s draw.

After Djokovic, Shelton, Ruud and Fonseca disappeared from contention, it is even wider now.

And with a Masters 1000 championship, $1.15 million and 1,000 ranking points waiting for Sunday’s winner, the most important tennis in Mason is still ahead.

Betting odds move continuously. Check current prices before wagering and bet responsibly.
