2026 FIFA World Cup Group F Preview: Can the Netherlands Finally Finish the Job?

Publish Date: 06/08/2026
Fact checked by: Mark Lewis
Today we take a look at Group F in the 2026 World Cup Soccer Tournament, can the Netherlands get it done, is Japan their biggest Challenger?

Few nations in World Cup history have experienced as much success without winning a championship as the Netherlands.

The Dutch have reached three World Cup Finals, produced some of the greatest players the sport has ever seen, and consistently remained among the world’s elite. Yet the ultimate prize has always somehow slipped away.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, the Netherlands once again enters with legitimate aspirations of making a deep run. Standing in their path in Group F are an ambitious Japanese side, a resurgent Sweden squad, and a Tunisian team looking to make history. Check out the Top Sportsbooks for betting on the World Cup.

On paper, the Dutch are the favorites. But Japan continues to narrow the gap between itself and football’s traditional powers, making this one of the more intriguing groups in the tournament.

Netherlands: Talent Meets Expectations

The Netherlands enters this World Cup carrying both tremendous talent and tremendous expectations.

For decades, the Dutch have been considered one of international football’s premier programs. The challenge has never been producing elite players.

The challenge has been winning the biggest matches.

Manager Ronald Koeman has assembled a roster loaded with quality despite several notable absences. Captain Virgil van Dijk continues to anchor the defense, while Frenkie de Jong remains one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the world.

The attack is dangerous as well.

Cody Gakpo has emerged as one of Europe’s most explosive forwards, while Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst bring valuable experience to the front line.

Most importantly, the Dutch possess quality throughout the pitch, something few teams can match.

Grueling Truth Verdict:

The strongest team in the group and the clear favorite to finish first.

Japan: Ready for the Next Step

Japan has become one of the most consistently successful nations outside Europe and South America.

Making the Round of 16 is no longer considered an accomplishment for the Samurai Blue.

Now the goal is reaching the quarterfinals and beyond.

Japan combines technical excellence, tactical discipline, and tremendous depth. While injuries to Kaoru Mitoma and Takumi Minamino are significant losses, this remains one of the deepest squads in Asia.

Takefusa Kubo has become one of the most creative attacking players in the tournament, while captain Wataru Endo provides leadership and stability in midfield.

Japan’s opening match against the Netherlands could ultimately determine who wins Group F. Check out the Top Sportsbook Bonuses for the 2026 World Cup.

Good enough to challenge for first place and dangerous enough to make a surprise run in the knockout rounds.

Sweden: New Life Under Graham Potter

At one point, Sweden appeared destined to miss the World Cup entirely.

Then Graham Potter arrived.

The respected manager helped transform Sweden’s fortunes and guided them through qualification when many believed their World Cup hopes were finished.

Now the Swedes enter the tournament with one of the most dangerous attacking groups in the competition.

Alexander Isak is among Europe’s elite strikers when healthy. Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as one of the most prolific goal scorers in the game. Anthony Elanga adds pace and creativity on the wing.

The question is whether Sweden can find enough consistency defensively to compete with the Netherlands and Japan.

Grueling Truth Verdict:

An explosive attack gives Sweden upset potential, but advancing will require near-perfect execution.

Tunisia: Looking to Make History

Tunisia enters this World Cup carrying an unfortunate distinction.

No African nation has appeared in five or more World Cups without advancing from the group stage.

The Eagles of Carthage hope to change that in 2026.

Tunisia has built its success around organization, discipline, and defensive structure. They rarely beat themselves and often force opponents into frustrating, low-scoring battles.

Captain Ellyes Skhiri remains the team’s leader in midfield, while Hannibal Mejbri brings creativity and energy to the attack.

The challenge is obvious.

This is one of the strongest groups in the tournament, and every point will be difficult to earn.

Grueling Truth Verdict:

Well-coached and competitive, but the uphill battle may simply be too steep.

Match of the Group

Netherlands vs. Japan – June 14

This is one of the most intriguing opening matches of the entire group stage.

The winner immediately takes control of Group F and puts itself in excellent position to claim first place.

Japan has the discipline and technical quality to challenge the Dutch, while the Netherlands possesses more overall talent and experience.

Expect a high-level tactical battle. Check out the Top Sportsbooks for US Bettors!

Final Group F Prediction

1. Netherlands

2. Japan

3. Sweden

4. Tunisia

The Netherlands has too much quality throughout the roster to overlook and should finish atop the standings.

Japan continues its rise as one of the world’s most respected football nations and advances comfortably to the knockout rounds.

Sweden remains dangerous throughout the tournament and could challenge for third-place qualification, while Tunisia competes hard but ultimately falls short.

The Dutch have spent decades chasing the one accomplishment missing from their football legacy.

While winning the World Cup remains a difficult task, Group F provides an opportunity to build momentum and confidence.

With van Dijk, de Jong, Gakpo, and a deep supporting cast, the Netherlands should emerge as Group F champions and position themselves for a potentially favorable path into the knockout rounds.

The real question is whether this generation can finally accomplish what so many great Dutch teams could not and bring a World Cup trophy back to Amsterdam.
