USA/Netherlands Preview
The United States managed to scrape and claw their way through Group A and is now in the Round 16 at the 2022 World Cup. They’ll be facing the Netherlands who is the 8th-ranked team in the world.
Although the opponent is a well-established European power with a proven World Cup pedigree, it’s still a good draw considering that they have not seen the likes of Brazil, France or Argentina.
In World Cup history, the U.S. has only made it past the Round 16 once. That win was against CONCACAF rivals Mexico in 2002. This means they have never defeated a non-North American team at the World Cup knockout stage.
This is the time to do it. The Netherlands won the group stage without a loss, but they looked unsteady against Ecuador, which made them forget more beatable. However, the Dutch managed to get a point. Louis van Gaal’s team is still unbeaten in 18 matches. The U.S. will need to perform at its best for the tournament and to make history.
The most severe injury in this last match was the one suffered by Christian Pulisic while scoring his victory goal against Iran. The team called it a “precaution”, and he was immediately subbed out. Pulisic celebrated at the hotel with the squad, indicating that he would play. It is more concerning for Josh Sargent, who also left the match with an injury to his ankle after landing awkwardly on a ball. The injured man was seen crying on the sidelines. He had scans done the next day. Although his status is not known, a photo by Tim Ream on Wednesday morning showed him playing pool with Sargent. The U.S. striker can be seen standing there and is in good spirits.
