FC Cincinnati faces another massive Eastern Conference match Wednesday night when D.C. United visits TQL Stadium for a rescheduled regular-season contest.
The Orange and Blue enter at 9-11-9 with 36 points after Sunday’s frustrating 2-0 Hell is Real loss to Columbus. Cincinnati dominated large portions of that match, outshooting the Crew 24-4, but failed to convert any of its opportunities. Columbus scored from a corner in the 22nd minute and added a second on a counterattack after halftime.
That defeat increased the urgency around Pat Noonan’s team. Cincinnati remains in the playoff race, but D.C. sits only three points behind, making Wednesday another match with postseason implications.
The biggest question is whether Cincinnati can turn possession and chances into goals.
Kévin Denkey remains the Orange and Blue’s primary finisher, while Evander continues to drive the attack through his passing, set-piece ability and creativity around the penalty area. Pavel Bucha provides another attacking threat from midfield.
Cincinnati has created enough opportunities in recent matches to score more consistently than it has. Against Columbus, the Orange and Blue produced 24 shots without finding the net. The challenge Wednesday is converting that territorial advantage into high-quality finishes rather than merely accumulating attempts.
D.C. United enters with its own defensive concerns after suffering a 4-1 loss at Orlando City Saturday. D.C. actually outshot Orlando 16-14, but the Lions generated far better opportunities and punished several defensive mistakes.
The primary threat is Tai Baribo.
Baribo scored D.C.’s only goal against Orlando from the penalty spot, raising his season total to a team-leading 16 MLS goals. He recorded seven shots in that match and remains the player Cincinnati must account for every time D.C. moves into the attacking third.
D.C. also has João Peglow, Andre Dozzell and Nathan Ordaz available to support the attack, while veteran goalkeeper Sean Johnson provides experience at the other end.
Both teams arrive needing points and trying to recover from disappointing weekend losses.
That should create a match with considerable urgency from the opening whistle.
Sportsbook player markets for Wednesday’s match are not yet broadly posted. The thresholds below are recommended targets. Confirm final odds and starting lineups before wagering.
Cincinnati needs its No. 9 to convert the opportunities that went unfinished against Columbus.
Denkey remains the most natural finisher in the squad and should receive significant service from Evander and Bucha against a D.C. defense that just allowed four goals in Orlando.
The matchup becomes especially attractive if Cincinnati again controls possession and spends long stretches in the attacking third.
Recommended play: Denkey anytime goalscorer.
Baribo attempted seven shots against Orlando, illustrating just how heavily D.C. relies on him for attacking production.
Even if Cincinnati controls possession, Baribo should remain dangerous on counters and set pieces.
He does not need D.C. to dominate the match to generate opportunities. Three shots is a reasonable target for one of the Eastern Conference’s more productive strikers.
Cincinnati was shut out Sunday, but generating 24 shots suggests the attack was more wasteful than nonexistent.
D.C., meanwhile, has Baribo leading the line and has scored in three of its last four league matches.
The concern for both clubs is defense. Cincinnati has struggled to prevent counterattacks, while D.C. just conceded four goals to Orlando.
A 2-1 or 2-2 type of match is realistic.
With only a few matches remaining, neither club benefits much from sitting deep and protecting a draw.
Cincinnati needs separation in the standings. D.C. needs to close a three-point gap.
That urgency should create an increasingly open match if the score remains level into the second half.
Recommended target: Over 2.5 goals if available at a reasonable price.
Kévin Denkey — FC Cincinnati: Cincinnati’s primary striker and the player most likely to turn the club’s recent shot volume into goals.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: The creative centerpiece of the Orange and Blue attack. His ability to unlock D.C.’s defensive block could determine the match.
Pavel Bucha — FC Cincinnati: His movement from midfield will be important against a D.C. side that can be vulnerable when opponents attack quickly through central areas.
Tai Baribo — D.C. United: Leads the Black-and-Red with 16 MLS goals and enters after scoring against Orlando.
João Peglow — D.C. United: Created two chances against Orlando and provides another attacking option around Baribo.
Sean Johnson — D.C. United: The veteran goalkeeper could be extremely busy if Cincinnati produces anything close to the 24 shots it attempted against Columbus.

FC Cincinnati — Draw No Bet Over 2.5 Total Goals — Target Market Kévin Denkey Anytime Goalscorer Tai Baribo Over 2.5 Shots — Target Line
Cincinnati’s inability to score against Columbus was frustrating, but the performance was not devoid of attacking production. Generating 24 shots suggests the Orange and Blue are still capable of creating opportunities; they simply need much better finishing.
D.C. presents danger through Baribo, who is capable of punishing Cincinnati if the home side commits too many players forward.
But TQL Stadium, greater possession potential and the combination of Denkey and Evander give Cincinnati the edge.
Expect D.C. to make the game uncomfortable and Baribo to threaten on the counter, but Cincinnati should create enough chances to finally break through and secure three critical points.
Prediction: FC Cincinnati 2, D.C. United 1.
D.C. enters Wednesday at 7-10-12 with 33 points after losing 4-1 at Orlando, while Cincinnati stands at 9-11-9 with 36 points following its 2-0 loss to Columbus.
