Few MLS regular-season matches carry more emotion than Hell is Real, and Sunday’s meeting between FC Cincinnati and the Columbus Crew carries considerably more than state bragging rights.
FC Cincinnati enters the weekend ninth in the Eastern Conference with 36 points at 9-10-9, currently holding the final Wild Card position. Columbus sits 13th with 32 points at 9-15-5, only four points behind Cincinnati and still trying to keep its postseason hopes alive.
That makes Sunday essentially a playoff-pressure match before the playoffs even begin.
Cincinnati enters after a frustrating 3-2 home loss to the New England Revolution on Wednesday. Tom Barlow gave FCC an early lead before New England scored three consecutive goals. Kévin Denkey pulled Cincinnati within one in the 67th minute, and the Orange and Blue generated 23 shots, 10 shots on goal and 12 corners but could not complete the comeback.
The good news for Cincinnati is that its attack continues to create opportunities.
Evander has produced 13 goals and 13 assists, while Pavel Bucha has a career-high 14 goal contributions with six goals and eight assists. Denkey remains Cincinnati’s primary finisher and has scored at least 15 goals for a second consecutive season.
The bigger concern is preventing opponents from generating high-quality chances. Cincinnati has repeatedly surrendered goals on defensive breakdowns, including three against New England despite controlling nearly 59 percent of possession.
Columbus arrives with considerably more momentum.
The Crew defeated Charlotte FC 3-1 on Wednesday, rallying from an early deficit behind goals from Brais Méndez, Anass Zaroury and Taha Habroune. Columbus produced a club-record 33 shots with 14 on target and has now won three of its last four matches.
Méndez has quickly become one of Columbus’ most important players since arriving from Real Sociedad, producing five goals and three assists in his first 12 MLS appearances. Santiago Rodríguez has added two goals and three assists in seven matches, while Habroune has four goals and four assists during his breakout season.
Columbus also owns the advantage from the first 2026 Hell is Real meeting.
The Crew defeated Cincinnati 2-1 on July 25. Denkey gave FCC a ninth-minute lead, but Jamal Thiaré equalized before Dániel Gazdag converted a penalty shortly before halftime.
Cincinnati now gets the rematch at TQL Stadium, where the urgency should be obvious. A win creates valuable separation above Columbus in the playoff race. A Crew victory could pull the rivals within a single point.
Soccer player markets vary significantly by sportsbook. Confirm final odds, player availability and starting lineups before wagering.
Denkey enters Sunday in strong form after scoring against New England and already found the net against Columbus earlier this season.
His July goal came after Bucha and Evander combined to create the opportunity, demonstrating exactly why Cincinnati’s attacking trio can be so difficult to defend.
With Cincinnati desperately needing three points at home, Denkey should receive plenty of service inside the penalty area.
Méndez has made an immediate impact since joining Columbus, recording five goals and three assists in only 12 league appearances.
He also enters Sunday after scoring in the 3-1 victory against Charlotte.
Cincinnati has had difficulty defending attacking midfielders arriving between the lines, and Méndez possesses both the passing ability and finishing quality to take advantage.
Both teams enter with reasons to attack.
Cincinnati needs points to protect the final Eastern Conference Wild Card spot, while Columbus knows another loss could severely damage its postseason chances.
FCC has Denkey, Evander and Bucha. Columbus counters with Méndez, Rodríguez and Habroune.
Neither defense has been reliable enough to make a clean sheet the most likely outcome.
The current market sits around 3.5 total goals, with both sides of the market priced close to even money.
Despite the attacking talent, rivalry games with playoff implications can become more cautious as the pressure increases.
The first meeting finished 2-1, meaning another competitive three-goal result would cash the under.
A 2-1 or 1-1 outcome feels more likely than a wide-open five-goal shootout.
Kévin Denkey — FC Cincinnati: Cincinnati’s primary striker scored against Columbus in July and found the net again Wednesday against New England.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: The Brazilian remains FCC’s creative centerpiece with 13 goals and 13 assists this season.
Pavel Bucha — FC Cincinnati: Has produced six goals and eight assists and could be vital in determining whether Cincinnati controls the midfield.
Brais Méndez — Columbus Crew: Five goals and three assists in his first 12 MLS games and coming off another goal against Charlotte.
Santiago Rodríguez — Columbus Crew: Dangerous attacking midfielder with two goals and three assists since joining Columbus.
Taha Habroune — Columbus Crew: Breakout young midfielder with four goals and four assists who also scored Wednesday against Charlotte.

Columbus enters with better recent form and has already beaten Cincinnati once this season, so nothing about Sunday should be comfortable for the Orange and Blue.
The Crew are coming off one of their most impressive attacking performances of the year and have won three of four. Méndez gives Columbus another high-level creator capable of exploiting Cincinnati’s defensive mistakes.
But this matchup is at TQL Stadium, and Cincinnati understands exactly what is at stake.
FCC created plenty of scoring opportunities despite Wednesday’s loss, putting 10 shots on target against New England. If Denkey and Evander convert those chances more efficiently, Cincinnati has enough attacking quality to respond.
Expect a physical, emotional Hell is Real match with Columbus threatening until the final whistle. Cincinnati’s home-field advantage and greater urgency to protect its playoff position ultimately provide the narrow edge.
Prediction: FC Cincinnati 2, Columbus Crew 1.
Current markets generally have Cincinnati around +129 to +144, Columbus around +156 to +178 and the draw near +270 to +300. The primary total is 3.5 goals. Confirm final odds and starting lineups before kickoff.
