FC Cincinnati vs. San Jose Earthquakes Prediction & Match Preview

Major League Soccer returns to TQL Stadium on Saturday night when FC Cincinnati hosts the San Jose Earthquakes in an intriguing matchup between two of the league’s most dangerous attacking teams.

FC Cincinnati enters the contest attempting to rebound from a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew in the first Hell is Real Derby of the 2026 season. San Jose arrives in Cincinnati tied on points for first place in the Western Conference after earning a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy in the California Clásico.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET and will stream on Apple TV. Cincinnati enters as a slight home favorite, but the odds reflect how closely matched these teams appear heading into Saturday night.

FC Cincinnati enters the match with a 6-6-5 record and 23 points. The Orange and Blue have experienced an inconsistent overall season, but their attacking group has developed into one of the most explosive units in Major League Soccer.

Cincinnati returned from the FIFA World Cup break with an exciting 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at TQL Stadium. Pavel Bucha scored twice in the victory, while Kévin Denkey and Evander each added a goal.

The performance extended Cincinnati’s streak of scoring at least two goals to nine consecutive matches, tying the fourth-longest streak of its kind in MLS history. The Orange and Blue also improved to 5-2-1 at TQL Stadium this season.

Cincinnati was unable to maintain that momentum against Columbus despite taking an early lead. Denkey opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Bucha and Evander combined to create the opportunity.

Columbus responded with two first-half set-piece goals and protected its advantage throughout the second half. The defeat ended Cincinnati’s five-match road unbeaten streak and demonstrated the defensive and disciplinary concerns that have prevented the Orange and Blue from consistently turning offensive production into victories.

Denkey remains the primary finishing threat at the top of Cincinnati’s formation. His goal against Columbus was his 15th across all competitions this season and the 33rd of his FC Cincinnati career, moving him into a tie with Brenner for third place in club history.

Denkey’s physical strength, intelligent movement and ability to finish crosses make him especially dangerous against a San Jose defense that will attempt to maintain a relatively aggressive position on the field.

Evander remains the creative centerpiece of the Cincinnati attack. His assist against Columbus extended his goal-contribution streak to seven consecutive matches. He can influence the game with his passing, long-range shooting, movement between defensive lines and dangerous set-piece delivery.

Bucha provides another scoring option from midfield. His two-goal performance against Vancouver demonstrated how dangerous he can become when defenders devote too much attention to Denkey and Evander.

San Jose enters the match with a 10-4-3 record, 33 points, 35 goals scored and only 20 goals allowed. The Earthquakes are tied with Vancouver atop the Western Conference but sit behind the Whitecaps because of goal differential.

The Earthquakes have also been one of the league’s strongest road teams, compiling a 6-1-1 record away from home during the first half of the season.

San Jose’s first two matches following the World Cup break produced mixed results. The Earthquakes struggled in a lopsided loss to Orlando City before responding with a much stronger performance against the LA Galaxy.

San Jose controlled 58 percent of the possession, attempted 19 shots and produced 2.6 expected goals against the Galaxy. Reid Roberts scored the equalizer in the 63rd minute, and the Earthquakes nearly secured all three points before Timo Werner had a stoppage-time penalty kick saved.

Although San Jose was forced to settle for a draw, the performance demonstrated the team’s ability to control possession, create sustained pressure and generate opportunities from several different areas of the field.

The Earthquakes do not depend entirely on one scorer. Eight different San Jose players have recorded at least two goals, while 10 players have contributed multiple assists.

San Jose ranks among the MLS leaders in goals, assists, expected goals and corner kicks won. The Earthquakes have also allowed only one goal from outside the penalty area and one from a set piece, demonstrating their ability to defend situations that have frequently created problems for Cincinnati.

Preston Judd has emerged as one of the most productive American forwards in MLS. Through his first 15 appearances of the season, Judd had recorded a career-high 11 goals and two assists.

He also scored in four consecutive road matches before the World Cup break. His movement inside the penalty area and ability to finish chances in open play give San Jose a reliable scoring threat whenever he is available for selection.

Werner provides San Jose with international experience, elite speed and the ability to attack space behind Cincinnati’s defensive line. The former Chelsea, Tottenham and RB Leipzig forward may not have converted the late penalty against the Galaxy, but his movement and willingness to attack defenders should create problems throughout the evening.

Oddsmakers have installed FC Cincinnati as approximately a -105 favorite, with San Jose listed near +240 and the draw around +330. The total is set at 3.5 goals, with the over priced as the favorite.

Those odds suggest sportsbooks expect Cincinnati’s home-field advantage to provide a slight edge but also anticipate a high-scoring and competitive match.

FC Cincinnati has scored at least two goals in nine of its last 10 matches, including four goals against Western Conference leader Vancouver.

Evander, Denkey and Bucha give the Orange and Blue three reliable scoring threats. Cincinnati has also recorded five victories in eight MLS matches at TQL Stadium this season.

San Jose has scored 35 goals through 17 matches and features one of the deepest attacking groups in MLS. The Earthquakes have eight players with at least two goals and should create opportunities against a Cincinnati defense that has allowed five goals in two matches since returning from the World Cup break.

Expect both teams to create several quality scoring opportunities.

Denkey enters the match after scoring against both Vancouver and Columbus.

He has reached 15 goals across all competitions this season and continues to benefit from Evander’s creativity and Bucha’s ability to advance from midfield.

San Jose has defended well for most of the season, but Cincinnati’s movement around the penalty area should force the Earthquakes’ central defenders to make difficult decisions.

Evander can pull defenders away from Denkey by operating between the midfield and defensive lines. Cincinnati can also create chances for its striker through crosses from Ender Echenique and other wide players.

Denkey is the most likely Cincinnati player to finish one of those opportunities.

The total is set at 3.5 goals, which is a significant number for an MLS match, but both teams have demonstrated the ability to participate in high-scoring contests.

Cincinnati’s return from the World Cup break produced a seven-goal game against Vancouver. The Orange and Blue created several outstanding attacking opportunities but also struggled to protect their defensive structure.

San Jose ranks among the league leaders in goals, assists and expected goals. The Earthquakes attempted 19 shots and produced 2.6 expected goals against the Galaxy despite scoring only once.

Cincinnati will attack aggressively in front of its home supporters, while San Jose possesses the speed and passing ability to punish the Orange and Blue whenever possession changes.

A 3-2 or 2-2 result is realistic.

Evander has recorded a goal or assist in seven consecutive matches and remains the player most capable of changing the contest with one moment of individual brilliance.

He scored from outside the penalty area against Vancouver and then provided the final pass for Denkey’s goal against Columbus.

Evander should receive opportunities from direct free kicks, penalties and open play. San Jose has defended shots from outside the box exceptionally well this season, but Evander possesses the accuracy and creativity necessary to challenge that strength.

The Brazilian playmaker is currently listed near +105 in some anytime goalscorer markets, providing more attractive odds than Denkey while still offering a strong scoring opportunity.

The Matchup Context: Cincinnati’s Creativity vs. San Jose’s Collective Pressure

FC Cincinnati will likely attempt to establish control through Evander and Bucha.

Evander will move between San Jose’s midfield and defensive lines, searching for space to turn and create scoring opportunities. Bucha must provide balance by helping Cincinnati maintain possession while also making delayed runs toward the penalty area.

Denkey’s positioning will influence the entire matchup. If San Jose’s central defenders remain close to him, Evander should receive additional space outside the penalty area. If the Earthquakes step forward to pressure Evander, Denkey could find openings between or behind the defenders.

San Jose must prevent Cincinnati from playing directly through the middle of the field. The Earthquakes may attempt to force the Orange and Blue into wider areas before using their numbers to defend crosses into Denkey.

That approach carries considerable risk because Cincinnati’s wide players have enough speed to reach dangerous positions near the end line.

San Jose will attempt to create pressure through possession, overlapping runs and quick combinations. The Earthquakes controlled 58 percent of the ball against the Galaxy and repeatedly pushed their opponent deep into its defensive third.

Werner can operate from the left side or move centrally, giving San Jose the ability to change its attacking shape without making a substitution. His speed should challenge Cincinnati’s back line, especially if the Orange and Blue allow too much space behind their wingbacks.

Ousseni Bouda provides another physical and athletic attacking option. His direct running helped San Jose earn the late penalty against the Galaxy, and he should be capable of challenging Cincinnati’s defenders in transition.

San Jose’s greatest strength may be its ability to create scoring opportunities from multiple players. Cincinnati cannot focus entirely on Werner or Judd because Roberts, Daniel Munie, Beau Leroux and several other Earthquakes have contributed goals or assists.

Munie will be especially important on both ends of the field. The defender recorded his third assist of the season against the Galaxy and was selected to participate in the 2026 MLS All-Star Game.

However, his involvement in the Wednesday night All-Star festivities could create a difficult turnaround before Saturday’s match in Cincinnati.

The midfield battle will help determine which team controls the tempo. Cincinnati wants Evander to receive the ball facing San Jose’s goal, while the Earthquakes will attempt to force him to receive possession with defenders behind him and pressure arriving from the midfield.

San Jose must also account for Bucha’s late runs. The midfielder scored twice against Vancouver because the Whitecaps became preoccupied with Cincinnati’s primary forwards.

Set pieces could become another important storyline. Columbus scored both of its goals against Cincinnati from dead-ball situations, including a corner kick and a penalty.

San Jose has been one of MLS’s strongest teams when defending set pieces, allowing only one goal from those situations this season. That could limit one of Cincinnati’s most reliable methods of creating late-game opportunities.

The transition battle may ultimately decide the match.

Cincinnati cannot afford to commit too many players forward and allow Werner or Bouda to attack an exposed defensive line. San Jose faces a similar challenge because Evander can turn one defensive recovery into an immediate scoring opportunity for Denkey.

Whichever team manages those moments more effectively should have the best opportunity to secure three points.

Players to Watch

Evander, FC Cincinnati: Evander has recorded a goal or assist in seven consecutive matches. His creativity, long-range shooting and set-piece delivery make him the most important player in Cincinnati’s attack.

Kévin Denkey, FC Cincinnati: Denkey has scored in consecutive matches and has 15 goals across all competitions this season. His matchup against San Jose’s central defenders will be one of the most important storylines of the evening.

Pavel Bucha, FC Cincinnati: Bucha scored twice against Vancouver and assisted Denkey’s goal against Columbus. His ability to contribute from deeper midfield positions gives Cincinnati another dangerous scoring option.

Timo Werner, San Jose Earthquakes: Werner provides San Jose with speed, experience and positional versatility. He missed a late penalty against the Galaxy but remains capable of creating or finishing opportunities in transition.

Daniel Munie, San Jose Earthquakes: Munie has helped anchor a defense that allowed only 20 goals through 17 matches. He also recorded his third assist of the season against the Galaxy and earned a place in the MLS All-Star Game.

Ousseni Bouda, San Jose Earthquakes: Bouda’s speed and direct attacking style can stretch Cincinnati’s defensive formation. He earned San Jose’s late penalty opportunity against the Galaxy and should remain dangerous whenever the Earthquakes counterattack.

Recent Head-to-Head History

FC Cincinnati has won the last two meetings between the clubs.

The Orange and Blue defeated San Jose 6-0 at TQL Stadium in September 2022 before earning a 4-2 road victory in June 2024. San Jose won the first meeting between the teams 1-0 in May 2019.

Those previous results demonstrate Cincinnati’s ability to create scoring opportunities against the Earthquakes, but San Jose’s 2026 team appears considerably more balanced and dangerous than the group Cincinnati faced two years ago.

The Verdict

Prediction: FC Cincinnati 3, San Jose Earthquakes 2

Pick: Both Teams to Score — Yes

FC Cincinnati enters the match with an inconsistent record, but the Orange and Blue have become one of Major League Soccer’s most dangerous attacking teams.

Evander, Denkey and Bucha give Cincinnati several ways to break down San Jose’s defensive structure. The Orange and Blue have also been productive at TQL Stadium, where they have earned five victories through eight MLS matches.

San Jose will provide one of Cincinnati’s most difficult home challenges of the season. The Earthquakes are tied atop the Western Conference, have won six of their eight road matches and feature enough attacking depth to challenge a Cincinnati defense that has struggled to consistently protect leads.

Werner and Bouda should find opportunities in transition, while San Jose’s midfield movement could create problems around the edge of Cincinnati’s penalty area.

However, San Jose’s defensive structure showed signs of vulnerability immediately following the World Cup break, and Cincinnati has scored multiple goals in nine consecutive matches.

Evander’s creativity and Denkey’s finishing should allow the Orange and Blue to produce enough opportunities to secure a narrow victory in front of their home supporters.

Expect an open, aggressive and entertaining match featuring chances at both ends of the field. San Jose should score at least once, but Cincinnati’s home-field advantage and collection of elite attacking players may provide the difference.

A 3-2 FC Cincinnati victory is the most likely result, with both teams to score serving as the strongest betting selection.
