FC Cincinnati enters its Halloween matchup with Philadelphia Union knowing exactly what is at stake: win and the Orange and Blue are in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Cincinnati sits eighth in the Eastern Conference with 43 points and has two regular-season games remaining. A victory Saturday would guarantee a fifth consecutive playoff appearance. A draw could also be enough depending on results involving Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls and New York City FC.
Philadelphia has already secured its postseason berth and enters with 47 points in sixth place. However, the Union still have plenty to play for. A win or draw at TQL Stadium would guarantee Philadelphia finishes at least seventh and avoids the Eastern Conference Wild Card game.
Cincinnati enters in encouraging form.
The Orange and Blue are unbeaten in their last three matches, beating D.C. United twice before earning a 2-2 draw at Inter Miami Wednesday night. Kenji Mboma Dem and Samuel Gidi scored in Miami, with Evander assisting both goals. Cincinnati also established a new club record with 66 MLS goals this season.
Evander continues to drive the attack. He enters with 31 MLS goal contributions, including a league-leading 17 assists. Kévin Denkey remains Cincinnati’s primary finisher with 17 goals.
Philadelphia represents a much tougher challenge than its early-season record suggested.
After having only 10 points through its first 16 matches, the Union changed coaches and produced one of the league’s strongest second-half turnarounds. Interim coach Ryan Richter guided Philadelphia through a 15-match unbeaten run that pushed the club comfortably into playoff position.
The Union also have confidence from the first meeting.
Philadelphia demolished Cincinnati 5-0 on September 9, although that match changed dramatically after Obinna Nwobodo received a red card in the 16th minute. It was Philadelphia’s third consecutive victory over Cincinnati.
The biggest difference Saturday is personnel.
Philadelphia leading scorer Milan Iloski is out with a hamstring injury after scoring 19 goals this season. Cavan Sullivan, however, is expected back after missing two matches with an ankle injury, while Bruno Damiani returns from suspension. Jesús Bueno is also expected back. Danley Jean Jacques is suspended, while Alejandro Bedoya and Japhet Sery Larsen are unavailable and Geiner Martínez is questionable.
Cincinnati will be without defenders Miles Robinson, Julián Malatini and Tyrell Malacia, all listed out with leg injuries on the latest MLS availability report.
That makes this matchup look increasingly like an offensive battle.
Soccer prop availability varies by sportsbook. Prices below reflect current market ranges and can move before kickoff.
Denkey leads Cincinnati with 17 goals and should be central to the Orange and Blue attack in a game they desperately need to win.
Philadelphia will be without Sery Larsen and potentially Martínez in defense, increasing Denkey’s opportunities inside the penalty area.
Current anytime prices have been around +130.
Prediction: Kévin Denkey anytime goalscorer.
Evander assisted both Cincinnati goals against Inter Miami and remains the player most capable of creating something from nothing.
His set-piece responsibilities also add value in a match where Philadelphia could concede dangerous free kicks around the box.
Current anytime scoring prices have been around +120.
Prediction: Evander anytime goalscorer.
Sullivan has been cleared to return after missing two matches with an ankle problem.
The 17-year-old has produced seven goals and 14 assists in 20 starts and became a major reason Philadelphia surged up the standings during the second half of the season.
A one-shot-on-target line has been available around -160.
Prediction: Sullivan over 0.5 shots on target, provided he starts.
Cincinnati has scored a club-record 66 MLS goals, but defensive consistency remains Pat Noonan’s biggest concern.
Philadelphia has also been dangerous away from home, while both clubs have seen eight of their previous 10 relevant home/away matches finish over 2.5 goals.
The market is pricing Over 3.5 near even money, roughly -110 to -120 depending on sportsbook.
Prediction: Over 3.5 goals.
Kévin Denkey — FC Cincinnati: Seventeen goals make him Cincinnati’s primary finishing threat.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: Second in MLS with 31 goal contributions and the league leader with 17 assists.
Kenji Mboma Dem — FC Cincinnati: Scored a spectacular equalizer against Inter Miami and gives Noonan another explosive attacking option.
Cavan Sullivan — Philadelphia: Expected back from injury and capable of immediately changing the Union attack with his creativity.
Bruno Damiani — Philadelphia: Returns from suspension at an important time with Iloski sidelined.
Andre Blake — Philadelphia: The veteran goalkeeper has seven clean sheets this season and remains one of Philadelphia’s biggest advantages in close games.
The moneyline shows just how evenly matched this game is.
FC Cincinnati is around +140, Philadelphia around +145 to +160, and the draw near +300 depending on sportsbook. The primary goal total is 3.5.
Cincinnati’s motivation is difficult to ignore.
Philadelphia has already clinched, while Cincinnati controls its playoff destiny and has the benefit of playing at TQL Stadium. The Union’s absence of Iloski also removes their leading scorer.
Philadelphia still has enough quality to score, particularly with Sullivan and Damiani returning, which makes the total more attractive than attempting to predict a comfortable Cincinnati win.
FC Cincinnati 3, Philadelphia Union 2
FC Cincinnati Moneyline +143Over 3.5 Goals Kévin Denkey Anytime Goal scorer Cavan Sullivan Over 0.5 Shots on Target — if starting
Philadelphia has owned this matchup recently, including September’s 5-0 victory, but the circumstances are very different this time.
Cincinnati enters undefeated in three straight matches, has scored a franchise-record 66 MLS goals and can clinch the postseason with a victory.
Philadelphia’s attack becomes less intimidating without 19-goal scorer Milan Iloski, while the Union’s defensive injury situation creates opportunities for Denkey and Evander.
Expect Philadelphia to make Cincinnati work for it, particularly after Sullivan’s return, but the combination of home-field advantage and playoff urgency should push the Orange and Blue across the finish line.
Final Prediction: FC Cincinnati 3, Philadelphia Union 2.
Confirm starting lineups before wagering, particularly Sullivan’s status. Philadelphia’s latest update says he “should be good,” while Iloski, Bedoya and Sery Larsen are out and Jean Jacques is suspended. Cincinnati remains without Robinson, Malatini and Malacia.
