FC Cincinnati returns to TQL Stadium Wednesday night for an important Eastern Conference matchup against New York City FC with only one point separating the clubs in the standings.
The Orange and Blue enter at 7-6-6 with 27 points, good for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. NYCFC sits directly behind Cincinnati with 26 points through 19 matches.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at TQL Stadium, with the match airing globally on Apple TV. Tickets were available for as low as approximately $12 at the time of writing.
The betting market gives Cincinnati a significant home-field advantage. DraftKings had FC Cincinnati around -105 on the regulation moneyline, NYCFC approximately +225 and the draw near +285. The total is set at 3.5 goals, with the Over around +110 and the Under approximately -140.
There is plenty of evidence supporting another entertaining matchup.
The teams played an incredible 4-4 draw at Yankee Stadium on April 22, with Cincinnati scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to steal a point after trailing 4-2. Kévin Denkey scored twice for Cincinnati, Nicolas Fernández Mercau scored twice for New York and Evander converted the dramatic equalizing penalty in the 95th minute.
Wednesday’s rematch arrives with considerably greater postseason significance.
Cincinnati can strengthen its position above NYCFC.
New York can leapfrog the Orange and Blue with a road victory.
Expect intensity from the opening whistle.
FC Cincinnati enters Wednesday following a difficult 1-1 road draw against Orlando City SC on Saturday night.
Pavel Bucha scored in the 23rd minute, continuing his recent offensive surge, before Tyrese Spicer equalized for Orlando three minutes into the second half. The match was played in 90-degree heat, making the point even more impressive considering Cincinnati’s congested August schedule.
The result moved Cincinnati to 27 points and kept Pat Noonan’s club directly ahead of NYCFC in the Eastern Conference standings.
More importantly, the Orange and Blue now return to one of their greatest advantages.
TQL Stadium.
Cincinnati is 6-2-1 at home in MLS play this season and 10-3-1 there across all competitions. The Orange and Blue have also won three consecutive MLS home matches. A victory against NYCFC would give Cincinnati its second-longest regular-season home winning streak in club history.
That home-field advantage becomes particularly important against an NYCFC club that has historically caused Cincinnati problems.
The Orange and Blue have not recorded an outright victory against New York since Game One of the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. Cincinnati is 0-3-2 in the five meetings since that victory.
Wednesday provides an opportunity to change that.
Almost every FC Cincinnati offensive conversation eventually comes back to Evander.
And for good reason.
The Brazilian playmaker enters Wednesday with 11 goals and 11 assists in MLS play, putting him among the league’s most productive offensive players.
His season has become even more impressive when considering how slowly it started.
When Cincinnati and NYCFC met in April, Evander’s stoppage-time penalty was only his third goal contribution of the MLS season. Since then, he has produced nine goals and 10 assists.
Evander can change games in several ways.
He can score from distance.
He can deliver dangerous free kicks.
He can make the final pass.
He can drop deeper into midfield and control possession.
And when Cincinnati’s forwards occupy defenders, Evander becomes extremely dangerous arriving around the top of the penalty area.
NYCFC’s ability to prevent him from finding those spaces will be one of the defining tactical battles Wednesday night.
Kévin Denkey already knows what it feels like to score against New York City.
He scored twice in the April 4-4 draw, finishing in the 32nd and 65th minutes.
Denkey enters the rematch with 11 MLS goals, tied with Evander for Cincinnati’s team lead. Current anytime goalscorer markets place Denkey around +125 depending on the sportsbook.
The matchup makes sense for him.
NYCFC wants to possess the ball and play through pressure.
That approach can create space behind the midfield when possession turns over.
If Evander receives the ball facing forward, Denkey becomes extremely difficult to contain because of his combination of strength, acceleration and finishing ability.
Cincinnati does not need 60 percent possession to create quality chances.
A few clean transitions may be enough.
Defenses cannot concentrate exclusively on Evander and Denkey.
Pavel Bucha is becoming increasingly dangerous.
The Czech midfielder scored Cincinnati’s goal against Orlando and now has five MLS goals this season. He has also scored three times in his last four appearances across all competitions.
Bucha’s biggest strength is his timing.
He does not always begin attacking sequences in advanced positions.
Instead, he arrives late.
Defenders naturally focus on Denkey.
Midfielders become preoccupied with Evander.
Bucha recognizes the resulting space and attacks it.
That makes his current anytime goalscorer price particularly interesting.
One betting market had Bucha available around +600 to score anytime, creating considerably more upside than the shorter prices attached to Cincinnati’s established stars.
New York City FC should arrive in Cincinnati frustrated.
The Pigeons led Philadelphia Union 2-0 at halftime Sunday before allowing three unanswered second-half goals in a 3-2 defeat at Yankee Stadium.
Bénie Traoré converted a penalty after only four minutes.
Brazilian newcomer Luighi added another penalty during first-half stoppage time.
Then everything changed.
Danley Jean Jacques scored three minutes after halftime before Bruno Damiani struck twice in six minutes to complete Philadelphia’s comeback. The defeat snapped NYCFC’s three-game unbeaten run in MLS.
It was a particularly painful result because New York had opportunities to extend the lead before Philadelphia seized control.
That inability to finish the match should concern Pascal Jansen heading into TQL Stadium.
Cincinnati has developed a reputation for late goals.
NYCFC just demonstrated vulnerability when protecting a lead.
That combination could become important if Wednesday’s match remains close entering the final 20 minutes.
The most important positive for New York is the return of Nicolas Fernández Mercau.
Fernández missed Sunday’s Philadelphia match because of suspension but will be available against Cincinnati. He enters Wednesday with 13 goals and four assists, making him NYCFC’s leading scorer and one of the league’s most dangerous attacking players.
Cincinnati does not need reminding.
Fernández scored twice in the April meeting.
He opened the scoring in the 20th minute and struck again in the 35th, helping NYCFC build a first-half advantage.
His individual matchup with Cincinnati’s midfield could be just as important as Evander’s influence at the opposite end.
Both players can create.
Both can score.
Both can turn one defensive mistake into a goal.
Wednesday could ultimately become a duel between two of the Eastern Conference’s best attacking midfielders.
New York will regain Fernández, but Pascal Jansen remains without a large group of important players.
NYCFC’s official availability report listed eight players out against Cincinnati: Aiden O’Neill, Kai Trewin, Maxi Moralez, Alonso Martínez, Arnau Farnós, Thiago Martins, Drew Baiera and Hannes Wolf.
That is a substantial list.
Moralez remains one of the club’s most intelligent playmakers.
Thiago Martins is an experienced defensive leader.
Wolf provides attacking production.
Martínez gives NYCFC another scoring option.
Trewin and O’Neill further reduce Jansen’s depth.
The injuries become even more important during a short turnaround.
NYCFC played Philadelphia on Sunday.
Now it travels to Cincinnati for a Wednesday match.
Depth matters.
Cincinnati has also been dealing with a difficult schedule, but the Orange and Blue being at home could provide an important edge.
Despite the injuries, Cincinnati cannot assume New York will struggle offensively.
The Pigeons have added Bénie Traoré and Luighi, and both scored against Philadelphia.
Traoré, a 23-year-old Designated Player who joined NYCFC from FC Basel, scored his first league goal for New York against Philadelphia.
Luighi, the Brazilian U22 Initiative addition on loan from Palmeiras, also scored during his MLS debut.
They add speed around Fernández.
That matters against Cincinnati.
Noonan specifically praised NYCFC’s technical ability and its effectiveness at inviting pressure before breaking through opponents and attacking quickly into space.
If Cincinnati presses recklessly, NYCFC has the talent to punish it.
FC Cincinnati is the strongest overall selection.
The Orange and Blue are approximately -105 on the moneyline, which is a reasonable price considering their home record and NYCFC’s injury situation.
Cincinnati is 6-2-1 at TQL Stadium in MLS competition and has won three consecutive league matches there.
NYCFC still has enough attacking quality to make this difficult.
Fernández returns.
Traoré adds speed.
Luighi gives Jansen another dangerous option.
Matt Freese can keep New York competitive.
But losing eight available players becomes increasingly difficult to overcome on the road during a midweek match.
Recommendation: FC Cincinnati Moneyline.
Four goals is a significant number.
But these teams have already demonstrated why the market is willing to set the total at 3.5.
Their first meeting produced eight goals.
NYCFC scored four.
Cincinnati scored four.
Denkey scored twice.
Fernández scored twice.
Ojeda scored.
Talles Magno scored.
Chirila scored.
Evander converted a penalty.
Current markets have Over 3.5 around +100 to +110, depending on the sportsbook.
There are reasons for caution.
NYCFC has conceded only 27 goals in 19 MLS matches, and Cincinnati’s most recent league match finished only 1-1.
But the attacking talent remains considerable.
Evander.
Denkey.
Fernández.
Traoré.
Luighi.
Bucha.
Another open match could quickly turn 1-1 into 2-2.
Recommendation: Over 3.5 Goals.
Evander remains one of Cincinnati’s strongest player-prop options.
He has 11 MLS goals and scored the dramatic tying penalty against NYCFC in April.
Current anytime goalscorer prices have Evander around +150, depending on the sportsbook.
The appeal goes beyond his scoring total.
Evander handles important set pieces.
He can shoot from distance.
He gets opportunities around the penalty area.
And if Cincinnati receives a penalty, he becomes the obvious candidate to take it.
NYCFC’s injuries could also disrupt its defensive organization.
That creates additional opportunities for Cincinnati’s best attacking player.
Recommendation: Evander Anytime Goalscorer.
For bettors looking for a higher-risk, higher-reward option, Bucha is extremely interesting.
He has scored three times in his last four appearances across all competitions and enters Wednesday immediately after scoring Cincinnati’s goal at Orlando.
Current markets have offered Bucha around +600 to score anytime.
Those odds reflect the obvious reality.
He is not Cincinnati’s primary scorer.
Evander and Denkey will receive more opportunities.
But Bucha has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to arrive in dangerous positions without receiving the defensive attention devoted to Cincinnati’s stars.
At +600, bettors do not need Bucha to be Cincinnati’s most likely scorer.
They need his scoring probability to be better than the price implies.
His recent form makes that possibility attractive.
Recommendation: Pavel Bucha Anytime Goalscorer.
Wednesday’s tactical battle should be fascinating.
NYCFC wants opponents to press.
That may sound unusual.
But Jansen’s team is technically comfortable enough to invite pressure before finding open players and rapidly attacking the resulting space.
Noonan specifically identified that quality as one of NYCFC’s biggest strengths.
Cincinnati therefore needs discipline.
Press too passively and NYCFC can control possession.
Press too aggressively and Fernández, Traoré or Luighi can attack the space behind the first line.
The same problem exists for New York.
Evander is extremely dangerous when opponents allow him to receive between the lines.
Denkey’s movement forces center backs to remain occupied.
Bucha attacks the spaces created around them.
The first meeting illustrated what happens when neither defense controls those situations.
Eight goals followed.
One statistic should terrify NYCFC after what happened against Philadelphia.
FC Cincinnati has been one of MLS’s best late-game teams.
Nineteen of Cincinnati’s 27 points have come from matches in which the Orange and Blue trailed at some stage.
Cincinnati has earned a league-leading 15 points when conceding first and has scored 16 goals from the 75th minute onward, also the most in MLS.
Now consider NYCFC’s last match.
New York led Philadelphia 2-0.
The Union scored in the 48th minute.
They equalized in the 69th.
They took the lead in the 75th.
That makes the final 20 minutes particularly important.
Even if NYCFC leads Wednesday, Cincinnati has proven repeatedly that the match is not over.
Evander, FC Cincinnati: Evander enters with 11 goals and 11 assists and remains the player most capable of deciding Wednesday’s match with one moment of brilliance.
Kévin Denkey, FC Cincinnati: Denkey has 11 MLS goals and scored twice against NYCFC in April. His physicality and movement should challenge a New York defense already dealing with multiple injuries.
Pavel Bucha, FC Cincinnati: Bucha scored against Orlando and has three goals over his last four appearances across all competitions. His late runs from midfield could again create opportunities.
Nicolas Fernández Mercau, NYCFC: New York’s leading scorer has 13 goals and four assists and returns after serving a suspension against Philadelphia. He scored twice against Cincinnati in April.
Bénie Traoré, NYCFC: The new Designated Player scored his first NYCFC goal against Philadelphia and gives New York additional speed on the left side of the attack.
Luighi, NYCFC: The Palmeiras loanee scored from the penalty spot during his MLS debut Sunday. His speed and willingness to attack defenders could make him dangerous in transition.
Matt Freese, NYCFC: The United States international has recorded three clean sheets while making 63 saves through 19 appearances. Cincinnati’s ability to force him into difficult saves could determine whether the Orange and Blue turn their home-field advantage into three points.
Wednesday marks the 21st all-time meeting between FC Cincinnati and NYCFC across all competitions, making New York one of Cincinnati’s most frequently faced opponents.
The recent series has favored NYCFC.
Cincinnati has gone 0-3-2 in its last five matches against New York since defeating the Pigeons in Game One of the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs.
But this rivalry has produced some remarkable matches.
The teams have now played two separate 4-4 draws.
The first came in June 2022.
The second came April 22, 2026.
That April match might have been the most dramatic of them all.
NYCFC led 4-2 entering stoppage time.
Andrei Chirila scored in the 92nd minute.
Evander converted a penalty in the 95th.
Final score: 4-4.
Wednesday’s rematch has the potential to produce another memorable chapter.
Prediction: FC Cincinnati 3, New York City FC 2
Best Bet: FC Cincinnati Moneyline
This is one of the more intriguing Eastern Conference matches of the midweek MLS schedule.
Only one point separates the clubs.
Both have elite attacking playmakers.
Both desperately need points.
And their first meeting produced one of the wildest matches of Cincinnati’s season.
NYCFC deserves respect.
Nicolas Fernández Mercau returns after scoring twice against Cincinnati in April.
Traoré gives New York another dynamic attacker.
Luighi immediately demonstrated his ability to contribute.
Matt Freese provides quality in goal.
But the injury list is difficult to ignore.
Eight NYCFC players are officially unavailable, including Maxi Moralez, Alonso Martínez, Thiago Martins and Hannes Wolf.
Cincinnati also gets the match at TQL Stadium.
The Orange and Blue are 6-2-1 there in MLS play and have won three consecutive league home games.
Then there is Evander.
New York must account for him everywhere.
If defenders step forward, Denkey can attack behind them.
If midfielders collapse toward Evander, Bucha can make late runs.
If NYCFC commits numbers forward, Cincinnati can counterattack.
And if the match remains close late, the Orange and Blue have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to produce decisive goals after the 75th minute.
Expect NYCFC to score.
Fernández is too dangerous, and Cincinnati has not consistently demonstrated that it can completely shut down quality opponents.
But Cincinnati’s depth, home-field advantage and ability to produce late goals should eventually become decisive.
A 2-2 score heading into the closing stages would not be surprising.
Then look for Evander, Denkey or one of Cincinnati’s midfield runners to create the difference.
Final Prediction: FC Cincinnati 3, New York City FC 2
Best Bet: FC Cincinnati Moneyline
Additional Plays: Over 3.5 Goals | Evander Anytime Goalscorer | Pavel Bucha Anytime Goalscorer
