FC Cincinnati closes the 2026 MLS regular season Saturday afternoon with one of its most difficult assignments of the year: a Decision Day showdown against Supporters’ Shield champion Nashville SC.
Cincinnati has already clinched a fifth consecutive MLS Cup Playoffs appearance, but its exact position remains unsettled. The Orange and Blue can finish anywhere from sixth through ninth in the Eastern Conference. A victory guarantees Cincinnati avoids dropping below seventh, while a win combined with Philadelphia dropping points against Toronto could push FCC into sixth. A loss could send Cincinnati into the Wild Card round depending on results involving Columbus and Orlando.
Nashville has different history at stake.
The Boys in Gold enter with 74 points, tied for the most in a single MLS regular season. Even a draw at TQL Stadium would give Nashville the outright league record. Nashville has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters’ Shield.
That gives both teams plenty of motivation despite having already secured postseason places.
Cincinnati enters playing some of its best soccer of the season.
The Orange and Blue are unbeaten in four straight, including a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia last weekend. Ayoub Jabbari scored the winner in the 70th minute after Evander forced a save from Andre Blake.
Cincinnati’s recent defensive improvement is particularly important. Pat Noonan’s team has recorded two clean sheets during the four-game unbeaten run after spending much of the season struggling to prevent goals.
That progress will face its biggest possible test against Nashville.
The first meeting was ugly for Cincinnati. Nashville won 4-0 at GEODIS Park on August 29, with Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar, Bryan Acosta and Ahmed Qasem scoring.
Saturday gives Cincinnati an opportunity to prove that result no longer reflects the team it has become.
Everything begins with Evander.
The Brazilian enters Decision Day with 31 goal contributions, second only to Lionel Messi in MLS. His 17 assists are tied for the league lead, and he has a goal plus four assists over his last four appearances.
Kévin Denkey gives Cincinnati the finisher needed to turn those opportunities into goals.
Denkey has scored 17 MLS goals and 21 across all competitions. One more league goal would tie Cincinnati’s single-season MLS record, while another goal in all competitions would tie the club record of 22.
That Evander-Denkey combination is Cincinnati’s best chance of breaking through a Nashville defense that has conceded an MLS-low 25 goals.
Nashville’s success has not simply been about scoring.
The Supporters’ Shield winners have combined an elite defense with arguably MLS’s most dangerous attacking trio.
Sam Surridge leads Nashville with 19 goals. Hany Mukhtar has 17 goals and eight assists, while Cristian Espinoza leads Nashville with 15 assists.
Espinoza’s matchup with Evander offers an intriguing subplot. Both are among the league’s premier creators and both arrive in strong form.
Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake has also been outstanding, leading MLS with 15 clean sheets while making 93 saves.
Nashville has earned points in 13 of its 16 road matches, demonstrating that its historic record has not been built entirely on home-field dominance.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: Thirty-one goal contributions and 17 assists make him Cincinnati’s creative centerpiece.
Kévin Denkey — FC Cincinnati: Seventeen MLS goals and one away from tying the club’s single-season league record.
Ayoub Jabbari — FC Cincinnati: Has scored five goals as a substitute and produced the winner against Philadelphia.
Sam Surridge — Nashville SC: Nineteen goals make him Nashville’s leading scorer and one of MLS’s most dangerous penalty-area finishers.
Hany Mukhtar — Nashville SC: Seventeen goals, eight assists and a long history of producing against Cincinnati.
Cristian Espinoza — Nashville SC: Fifteen assists and one of the best crossers and chance creators in MLS.
Player props vary by sportsbook. The player thresholds below are recommended betting targets if similar markets are available.
Denkey has both playoff motivation and individual history in front of him.
Cincinnati should attack aggressively knowing a victory secures its Round One position.
Prediction: Kévin Denkey anytime goalscorer.
Surridge scored in Nashville’s 4-0 victory over Cincinnati and remains the most dangerous pure finisher in the Nashville attack.
Prediction: Sam Surridge anytime goalscorer.
Evander enters tied for the MLS lead with 17 assists.
With Cincinnati needing a victory, virtually every major attacking sequence should flow through him.
Prediction: Evander over 0.5 assists.
The market favors the Under 3.5 at roughly -139. Nashville owns the league’s best defense, while Cincinnati has recently become much more organized without the ball.
Prediction: Under 3.5 goals.
This is essentially a pick’em on the three-way moneyline.
Current odds have Nashville near +144, Cincinnati around +151 and the draw approximately +278.
Nashville is unquestionably the stronger team over the full season, but Cincinnati’s home form deserves respect. FCC is 9-4-3 at TQL Stadium in league play.
Cincinnati also has more urgency. Nashville wants the points record, but its No. 1 playoff seed is already secure. Cincinnati’s result directly affects whether it goes straight to Round One or potentially falls into the Wild Card game.
FC Cincinnati 1, Nashville SC 1
Draw +278Under 3.5 Goals Kévin Denkey Anytime Goal scorer Evander Over 0.5 Assists — Target Market
Nashville embarrassed Cincinnati 4-0 in August, but this is a different FC Cincinnati team.
The Orange and Blue have tightened defensively, are unbeaten in four straight and will have the advantage of a motivated TQL Stadium crowd on Decision Day.
Nashville remains extraordinarily difficult to beat. The Supporters’ Shield champions combine elite defending with Surridge, Mukhtar and Espinoza at the other end.
Expect Cincinnati to produce a far more disciplined performance than it did in Nashville, with Denkey finding a goal through an Evander-created opportunity.
But Nashville has earned points almost everywhere it has gone this season, and the visitors need only one more point to stand alone with the best regular-season point total in MLS history.
That feels like the most likely ending.
Final Prediction: FC Cincinnati 1, Nashville SC 1.
Current odds list Nashville around +144, FC Cincinnati around +151 and the draw around +278, with Under 3.5 favored. Lines can move before kickoff, so confirm the final market and starting lineups Saturday afternoon.
