FC Cincinnati returns home Saturday night looking to recover from a difficult 4-0 loss at Nashville SC when D.C. United visits TQL Stadium.
The Orange and Blue enter 8-7-7 with 31 points, sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference. Despite the Nashville defeat, Cincinnati remains extremely dangerous at TQL Stadium and has one of MLS’s premier attacking players in Evander.
Evander enters after being named MLS Player of the Month for July and August, his second Player of the Month award this season. He has 13 MLS goals and was credited with a league-leading 24 goal contributions following Cincinnati’s August 22 draw against Seattle.
However, Cincinnati faces a major complication because this match falls during the FIFA international window. Starting goalkeeper Roman Celentano, striker Kévin Denkey, defender Teenage Hadebe and midfielder Samuel Gidi are among six FCC players called away. Denkey’s absence is especially significant because he has been one of Cincinnati’s primary scoring threats.
That places additional offensive responsibility on Evander, Pavel Bucha, Gerardo Valenzuela, Kenji Mboma Dem and Ayoub Jabbari.
D.C. United enters 5-7-10 with 25 points and remains very much alive in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Black-and-Red are coming off an impressive 0-0 draw against LAFC in which they limited a dangerous attack featuring Son Heung-min and Denis Bouanga to only one shot on target.
Forward Louis Munteanu has six league goals and gives D.C. a legitimate counterattacking threat, while João Peglow has become an important creator. Veteran goalkeeper Sean Johnson provides experience behind a D.C. defense that recorded its fifth clean sheet of the season against LAFC.
Cincinnati should control possession at home, but the international absences make this considerably more dangerous than the betting line suggests.
With Denkey away on international duty, Cincinnati’s attack should run even more heavily through Evander.
The Brazilian has 13 MLS goals and entered September with a league-leading 24 goal contributions. He has also been particularly productive at TQL Stadium, scoring in six consecutive home MLS matches through Cincinnati’s August 22 matchup with Seattle.
Whether he scores himself or provides the final pass, Evander is the player most likely to create Cincinnati’s decisive moment.
Munteanu has become an increasingly important part of D.C.’s attack and scored his sixth goal of the season in the 3-1 loss at Charlotte.
Cincinnati has conceded 51 goals, the second-most in the Eastern Conference entering this match, so D.C. should generate opportunities even if it spends long stretches without possession.
Expect Munteanu to be one of the primary targets when D.C. transitions forward.
Cincinnati possesses enough attacking talent to score at home even without Denkey, but its defensive record remains concerning.
The Orange and Blue have allowed 51 league goals, while D.C. has Munteanu, Peglow and several players capable of creating chances in transition.
Cincinnati’s backup goalkeeper will also be required with Celentano away with the United States national team.
The primary market has moved toward a high-scoring matchup, with the main total sitting around 3.5 goals at several books.
Taking over 2.5 provides a little more protection.
Cincinnati should attack aggressively after being shut out by Nashville, while D.C. has enough speed and creativity to exploit a Cincinnati defense that has struggled throughout the season.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: Cincinnati’s offensive centerpiece, MLS Player of the Month for July/August and the player most capable of deciding the match.
Pavel Bucha — FC Cincinnati: Important two-way midfielder who will need to help Cincinnati control possession and provide secondary scoring.
Ayoub Jabbari — FC Cincinnati: Could receive an expanded attacking role with Denkey away. Jabbari created one of Cincinnati’s better second-half opportunities against Nashville.
Louis Munteanu — D.C. United: Six-goal forward who gives D.C. its most dangerous direct attacking option.
João Peglow — D.C. United: Creative wide player who has supplied important service and assists throughout the season.
Sean Johnson — D.C. United: Veteran goalkeeper coming off a clean sheet against LAFC and likely to face significant pressure at TQL Stadium.

D.C. United’s defensive performance against LAFC shows why Cincinnati cannot treat this as an easy home matchup. The Black-and-Red are chasing a playoff position and should be capable of creating problems against a Cincinnati defense that has conceded too frequently.
The international window also removes several important players from Pat Noonan’s lineup, particularly Denkey and Celentano.
Still, Cincinnati has two major advantages: TQL Stadium and Evander.
Expect D.C. to keep the game close, but Cincinnati’s creative quality eventually produces the winning goal as the Orange and Blue respond to the Nashville defeat with three important points at home.
Prediction: FC Cincinnati 2, D.C. United 1.
