FC Cincinnati returns to TQL Stadium Saturday night desperately needing a response when Charlotte FC arrives for an important Eastern Conference matchup.

Cincinnati enters 8-8-7 with 31 points after a disastrous 5-0 loss at Philadelphia on Wednesday. That defeat followed a 4-0 loss at Nashville, meaning the Orange and Blue have been outscored 9-0 in their last two matches.

Making matters worse, Cincinnati will be without two of its most important midfielders. Evander is suspended because of yellow-card accumulation, while Obinna Nwobodo is suspended following his red card against Philadelphia. Evander leads MLS with 24 goal contributions and 11 assists, making his absence particularly significant.

That puts considerably more responsibility on Kévin Denkey, Pavel Bucha and Gerardo Valenzuela to create offense. Denkey scored against Charlotte in the teams’ first meeting this season, a 2-2 draw at Bank of America Stadium on May 9.

Charlotte enters in much better form. The Crown improved to 10-7-7 after defeating CF Montréal 2-1 Wednesday night and sits ahead of Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference standings. Charlotte also played Houston to a scoreless draw on September 5.

Pep Biel remains the centerpiece of Charlotte’s midfield. His assist against Montréal made him just the 22nd player in MLS history to record consecutive 10-goal, 10-assist seasons. Charlotte also has dangerous wide attackers in Allan Saint-Maximin and Liel Abada, who combined brilliantly for Abada’s goal against Montréal.

Cincinnati’s home field gives the Orange and Blue a chance to reset, but trying to break down Charlotte without Evander while simultaneously replacing Nwobodo’s defensive presence creates a difficult challenge.
