FC Cincinnati returns from the international break Saturday night with an important Eastern Conference road match against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Cincinnati enters 8-9-9 with 33 points, while Atlanta sits 7-14-6 with 27 points and 14th in the Eastern Conference. Both clubs desperately need points as the MLS playoff race enters its final weeks. Atlanta sits six points outside the play-in picture, while Cincinnati is trying to reverse a difficult late-season slide.
The Orange and Blue have struggled badly away from TQL Stadium. Their last five league matches include a 4-0 loss at Nashville, 5-0 loss at Philadelphia, 3-3 draw with Charlotte, 2-2 draw at Houston and 3-1 loss at Montréal.
That makes Saturday an important opportunity for Pat Noonan’s group to reset after extra training time during the international break.
Cincinnati still possesses two of MLS’s most productive attacking players.
Kévin Denkey has 14 goals and five assists, while Evander has 13 goals and 13 assists. Pavel Bucha has also contributed six goals and eight assists.
Cincinnati won the first meeting between these teams 2-0 on February 21, with Denkey and Nick Hagglund scoring late. FCC has also lost only once in its last nine meetings with Atlanta and is 2-1-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium under Noonan.
Atlanta, however, looks considerably different from the team Cincinnati defeated in February.
The Five Stripes added Swiss international striker Breel Embolo, who scored in his Atlanta debut and gives Tata Martino a powerful centerpiece alongside Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk.
Miranchuk leads Atlanta with six goals and seven assists, while Almirón has four goals and seven assists. Atlanta also strengthened its roster with Giuliano Galoppo, Paulo Díaz and Júnior Alonso.
The result could depend on which struggling defense handles the opposing stars better. Cincinnati must prevent Atlanta from finding Embolo centrally, while Atlanta faces the difficult task of keeping Denkey and Evander from combining around the penalty area.
Player markets can vary by sportsbook. Confirm final availability and starting lineups before wagering.
Denkey enters with 14 league goals in 24 appearances, making him Cincinnati’s leading scorer.
He also scored when these clubs met in February.
Atlanta has struggled defensively throughout the season, and Cincinnati should look to get Denkey into central positions rather than settling for low-percentage shots from distance.
If FCC scores Saturday, Denkey remains the most likely finisher.
Miranchuk has been Atlanta’s most productive attacking player, producing six goals and seven assists.
Embolo’s arrival could make Miranchuk even more dangerous.
With a physical striker occupying Cincinnati’s central defenders, Miranchuk should find more space between the midfield and back line to create chances or attack the penalty area himself.
Cincinnati has enough firepower through Denkey and Evander to threaten an Atlanta defense that has struggled for consistency.
The concern is Cincinnati’s own defending.
FCC conceded 17 goals across its previous five league matches, allowing at least two in each.
Atlanta now features Embolo, Almirón and Miranchuk together, making a clean sheet difficult to project for either side.
The market total currently sits at 3.5, with the under around -120 to -130 at several books.
Cincinnati’s recent matches have been high scoring, but the stakes could make this game more cautious than those results suggest.
Atlanta cannot afford another defeat, and Cincinnati desperately needs to stabilize defensively. A 1-1, 2-1 or 2-0 type of result keeps the under in play.
Kévin Denkey — FC Cincinnati: Cincinnati’s leading scorer with 14 goals and five assists and the primary target inside the penalty area.
Evander — FC Cincinnati: Has produced 13 goals and 13 assists and remains FCC’s most dangerous creator.
Pavel Bucha — FC Cincinnati: His ability to control midfield could determine whether Cincinnati prevents Atlanta from attacking repeatedly in transition.
Breel Embolo — Atlanta United: The Swiss international gives Atlanta a strong, physical striker capable of holding up play and attacking behind the defense.
Alexey Miranchuk — Atlanta United: Leads Atlanta with six goals and seven assists and should see plenty of the ball around Cincinnati’s penalty area.
Miguel Almirón — Atlanta United: The former Newcastle attacker has four goals and seven assists and remains one of Atlanta’s most dangerous transition threats.

Cincinnati has been extremely difficult to trust on the road, but the Orange and Blue have performed well historically against Atlanta and still possess enough attacking quality to punish defensive mistakes.
Atlanta’s roster is stronger than it was in February. Embolo adds a legitimate No. 9, while Miranchuk and Almirón provide creativity around him.
The Five Stripes should generate chances against a Cincinnati defense that has conceded far too frequently, but FCC’s combination of Denkey and Evander should create problems at the other end.
Expect a competitive match in which Cincinnati responds from its Montréal defeat but still struggles to completely shut down Atlanta’s revamped attack.
Prediction: Atlanta United 2, FC Cincinnati 2.
Current markets have Atlanta around +130 to +147, FC Cincinnati around +159 to +165 and the draw around +280 to +310. The primary total is 3.5 goals. Confirm final odds, injuries and starting lineups before wagering.
