Evander: The Brazilian Playmaker Driving FC Cincinnati’s Attack

FC Cincinnati has built one of Major League Soccer’ most ambitious rosters, and at the center of the club’s attack is Brazilian midfielder Evander da Silva Ferreira. Wearing the iconic No. 10, Evander has developed into one of the league’s most dangerous attacking midfielders, combining exceptional ball striking, creativity, passing vision and a flair for delivering decisive moments.

Evander arrived in Cincinnati in 2025 after becoming an MLS superstar with the Portland Timbers, but his soccer journey began long before he reached the United States. From Brazil to Denmark, European competition, Portland and eventually Cincinnati, Evander has steadily developed into a midfielder capable of both creating goals and scoring them himself.

At 28 years old, the Rio de Janeiro native is firmly in the prime of his career and has established himself as one of FC Cincinnati’s franchise players.

Who Is Evander?

Evander is a technically gifted Brazilian midfielder who can function as a traditional No. 10, an advanced No. 8 or a deeper playmaker depending on what his team needs.

Rather than simply waiting around the penalty area to create the final pass, Evander frequently drops into midfield to receive possession, helps connect the defensive and attacking phases and then advances into dangerous areas.

That versatility comes partly from his years in European soccer.

Evander has explained that his experience in Denmark forced him to become more than a traditional attacking midfielder. Because many Danish teams did not use a classic No. 10, he learned to play deeper, contribute defensively and help dictate the rhythm of matches.

The result is a player capable of controlling a match in several different ways.

Give him space outside the penalty area and he can shoot.

Press him aggressively and he can beat a defender or find a teammate.

Drop deep defensively and he can distribute the ball into attacking positions.

Give him a free kick within shooting distance and the opposition goalkeeper immediately has something to worry about.

Beginning His Career With Vasco da Gama

Evander’s professional journey began with one of Brazil’s historic clubs, Vasco da Gama, in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro.

He made his professional debut in 2016 and gradually emerged as one of the organization’s promising young midfielders.

One of his biggest early breakthroughs came during the Copa Libertadores. Evander became the youngest Vasco da Gama player to score twice in a Copa Libertadores match when he produced a brace against Universidad de Concepción in January 2018.

His performances attracted attention outside Brazil and eventually opened the door to Europe.

Developing Into a Star at FC Midtjylland

In 2018, Danish club FC Midtjylland brought Evander to Europe initially on loan before eventually making the move permanent.

Denmark became an extremely important stage in his development.

Evander wasn’t simply asked to be a flashy attacking midfielder. He had to adjust tactically, defend, maintain positional discipline and learn how to influence matches against European competition.

Over his time with Midtjylland, Evander recorded 50 goals and 38 assists in 167 appearances across all competitions. He also gained experience in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and other European competition.

He helped Midtjylland win a Danish league championship and two domestic cups. During the 2022-23 Europa League campaign, he also emerged as one of the competition’s leading creators, finishing as the tournament’s assists leader according to FC Cincinnati’s account of his European career.

By then, Evander had demonstrated that he could produce against a higher level of competition.

MLS came calling.

Becoming a Superstar With the Portland Timbers

Portland had monitored Evander for years.

Timbers scouts were impressed by his speed, willingness to shoot and ability to split defensive lines with passes. Portland also viewed him as a dangerous set-piece specialist capable of becoming the central attacking figure around whom an offense could operate.

The Timbers eventually made Evander their club-record signing ahead of the 2023 season.

His first MLS campaign showed flashes of what was coming. Evander finished 2023 with nine goals and four assists while adapting to a new league, new country and another style of soccer.

Then came 2024.

Evander exploded.

He finished the season with 15 goals and 19 assists, emerged as an MLS MVP finalist and earned a place on the MLS Best XI.

At one point during the season, Evander produced a goal contribution in 11 consecutive matches, one of the longest streaks in MLS history.

He wasn’t simply becoming one of Portland’s best players.

He was becoming one of the best players in Major League Soccer.

The Blockbuster Move to FC Cincinnati

FC Cincinnati made a major statement in February 2025 when the organization acquired Evander from Portland in a $12 million cash-for-player transaction, at the time described by the club as the largest deal of its kind in MLS history.

Cincinnati simultaneously signed Evander to a contract running through the 2027 season with an option for 2028.

The challenge was enormous.

FC Cincinnati had enjoyed tremendous success behind former MVP Luciano Acosta, and replacing that level of creativity wasn’t going to be easy.

Evander didn’t attempt to become Acosta.

He created his own identity.

A Spectacular First Season in Cincinnati

Evander immediately justified FC Cincinnati’s massive investment.

During the 2025 MLS regular season, he recorded 18 goals and 15 assists, matching the club record with 33 goal contributions in one season. His 18 goals also tied Cincinnati’s MLS single-season scoring record.

Perhaps even more impressive, it marked his second consecutive season reaching at least 15 goals and 15 assists.

According to FC Cincinnati, Evander joined Lionel Messi and Sebastian Giovinco as the only MLS players to accomplish that combination in consecutive seasons.

He was named to the MLS Best XI for the second consecutive season and became the first Brazilian player in league history to earn multiple Best XI selections.

Evander was also selected as captain of the 2025 MLS All-Star Team.

By the end of his first season in Cincinnati, any question about whether he could replace some of the offensive production lost with Acosta’s departure had been answered.

Evander wasn’t merely part of FC Cincinnati’s attack.

He had become the centerpiece of it.

Evander Continues to Dominate in 2026

The 2026 season has reinforced Evander’s status among MLS’ elite.

After a relatively quiet opening stretch, he produced a spectacular May, scoring seven goals and adding five assists in five matches. His 12 goal contributions accounted for 71 percent of Cincinnati’s goals during the month, earning him MLS Player of the Month for May.

He also recorded an extraordinary two-goal, three-assist performance against Orlando City SC, becoming the first player in FC Cincinnati history to record at least five combined goals and assists in one match.

Evander was selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, making it his third consecutive MLS All-Star selection. At the time of the announcement, he had nine goals and six assists in only 14 league appearances.

He also became the all-time leading Brazilian-born goalscorer in MLS history.

His summer form has been equally impressive. Against San Jose on August 1, Evander produced a goal and three assists as Cincinnati won 4-2. That performance gave him 103 MLS goal contributions through 104 career matches, making him the fifth-fastest player in league history to reach 100.

He scored again against Pachuca and Atlas in Leagues Cup before delivering another signature moment against New York City FC on August 19.

With the match tied 1-1 in stoppage time, Evander produced the winning goal in the 91st minute to give Cincinnati a dramatic 2-1 victory. It was already his third stoppage-time game-winning goal for the club.

Those are the moments that have transformed Evander from a talented playmaker into one of Cincinnati’s true match-winners.

Evander’s Biggest Strengths

Ball striking may be Evander’s most recognizable weapon. He possesses tremendous power and accuracy from outside the penalty area and doesn’t require much space to get a dangerous shot away.

That ability forces defenders to close him quickly, which creates opportunities for Evander to exploit with his passing.

His vision and creativity are equally important. Evander sees passing lanes before they fully develop and is particularly dangerous when breaking defensive lines. Portland’s scouting department originally highlighted his ability to split defenses with seemingly simple passes, and that skill remains central to his game.

Another major strength is set-piece delivery. Free kicks around the penalty area can become legitimate scoring opportunities, while his service from dead-ball situations gives Cincinnati another method of creating chances.

His dribbling and ball control make him difficult to dispossess. Evander doesn’t necessarily need spectacular tricks to beat opponents. A change of direction, quick touch or subtle acceleration can create the space he needs.

Perhaps most importantly, Evander has become extremely dangerous in decisive moments.

Goals in stoppage time, long-range strikes, multi-assist performances and match-winning plays have become recurring parts of his Cincinnati career.

There is also an underrated element to his game: positional versatility.

Evander can operate close to the striker, drop alongside central midfielders or move into different pockets to escape defensive attention. That makes it difficult for opponents to assign one player to stop him.

Where Can Evander Improve?

Even elite players have areas where opponents can attempt to exploit them.

One challenge with Evander’s freedom is maintaining positional balance.

Because he enjoys dropping deeper to receive the ball, there can be situations where Cincinnati loses its natural presence between the opposition’s midfield and defensive lines. Cincinnati Soccer Talk noted during the 2025 season that Evander’s tendency to drop into deeper positions could occasionally force other midfielders to compensate and alter the team’s structure.

Another area involves pressing and defensive influence.

Evander has developed considerably as a two-way midfielder since his days in Denmark, but analytics-based previews have noted that he isn’t the same type of aggressive presser or ball-progressing midfielder that Luciano Acosta was.

That doesn’t necessarily make Evander inferior. It simply means Cincinnati must construct its system around a different type of No. 10.

There is also the question of shot sustainability.

Evander is exceptionally good from distance, but long-range goals are naturally more difficult to reproduce consistently than chances created closer to goal. American Soccer Analysis noted that his extraordinary outside-the-box finishing played an important role in his 2025 production and warned that maintaining such an extreme level of finishing efficiency could be difficult.

Earlier in his Portland career, Evander also faced criticism regarding defensive work rate and occasionally disappearing from matches for extended stretches.

His performances since then, particularly throughout 2024, 2025 and 2026, suggest considerable growth in those areas.

The next evolution could be finding ways to influence matches just as heavily when opponents deny him space and force the game away from his preferred attacking positions.

What Are People Saying About Evander?

The praise surrounding Evander has become increasingly strong.

When Cincinnati acquired him, General Manager Chris Albright described Evander as one of the best players in MLS and specifically highlighted his creativity and vision as qualities that could transform Cincinnati’s attack.

Head coach Pat Noonan has repeatedly suggested that Evander’s ceiling may still be higher.

Following Evander’s enormous performance against Orlando in May 2026, Noonan said that when Evander receives the ball with space, “everybody comes to life.” He praised the midfielder’s ability to energize teammates, attack defenders one-on-one and create separation. Noonan then added that Evander had taken his game to another level while still believing there was more potential to unlock.

Even toward the end of Evander’s spectacular 2025 campaign, Noonan maintained that Cincinnati could find additional ways to get its star midfielder into better positions.

That’s an intriguing thought.

Evander produced 33 MLS goal contributions during his first Cincinnati regular season, earned consecutive Best XI selections and became an All-Star captain—and his coaching staff still believed he could become better.

MLS analysts have expressed similar admiration. Following his incredible 2024 season in Portland, league analysis described Evander as exactly the type of player a club can invest heavily in and build around for years.

His production in Cincinnati has strengthened that argument.

More Than a Traditional No. 10

Evander is difficult to categorize because describing him strictly as an attacking midfielder doesn’t fully explain his game.

He can be the creator.

He can be the scorer.

He can dictate tempo from deeper areas.

He can carry the ball through midfield.

He can score from a free kick.

He can produce from outside the penalty area.

And increasingly, he has demonstrated the ability to deliver when a game reaches its most important moments.

That combination separates him from many MLS midfielders.

Traditional creators often rely primarily on assists. Goalscorers depend largely upon teammates creating opportunities.

Evander can do both.

His back-to-back seasons with at least 15 goals and 15 assists demonstrate just how unusual that combination is.

Conclusion

Evander da Silva Ferreira’s journey from Rio de Janeiro to Denmark, Portland and Cincinnati has produced one of Major League Soccer’s premier attacking midfielders.

Vasco da Gama gave him his professional beginning.

FC Midtjylland provided the tactical education and European experience that expanded his game.

Portland gave him the opportunity to become an MLS superstar.

FC Cincinnati has provided the stage for him to become a franchise centerpiece.

There are still elements of his game that can improve. Cincinnati must continue finding the right balance between allowing Evander positional freedom and maintaining its midfield structure. His defensive influence can continue developing, and opponents will increasingly design entire game plans around preventing him from finding space.

But those concerns are greatly outweighed by what Evander provides.

Elite vision.

Outstanding ball striking.

Set-piece danger.

Creativity.

Dribbling.

Goals.

Assists.

And an increasingly impressive ability to produce when Cincinnati needs something special.

At 28 years old and in the heart of his prime, Evander isn’t simply FC Cincinnati’s No. 10—he has become one of the defining attacking players in Major League Soccer.

If FC Cincinnati is going to add more trophies to its collection, there is a very good chance Evander will be at the center of the biggest moments.
