What happened when I tried using Stake.us in Kentucky

When I opened Stake.us from my laptop, the page wouldn’t load. I tried on my phone, but I just had the same result even after refreshing multiple times. Just a message saying the site wasn’t available in my area.

To be sure, I checked the latest version of Stake.us’s Terms & Conditions, and unfortunately, it lists Kentucky as one of 17 “Excluded Territories.” That means if you’re here, you can’t sign up, verify your ID, or use the site at all. Even trying to use a KY-issued ID will get blocked during verification. And if you somehow got past that, you’d hit a wall when it comes time to redeem any prizes. So it looks like they’ve shut the door pretty firmly on Kentucky.

Why Kentucky’s on Stake.us’ no-play list

Stake.us never really said why they pulled the plug on Kentucky. But if you know anything about the state’s history with online gaming, it’s not super surprising. Back in 2010, Kentucky made headlines by going after a bunch of gaming sites and trying to seize over 100 domain names. That case fizzled out, but it also proved just how the state can be aggressive when it comes to internet-based gaming.

Even though sweepstakes casinos aren’t banned here, Kentucky’s still got a bit of a “strict parent” vibe when it comes to anything that looks like online gaming. Most people think that’s why Stake.us decided to play it safe and just block access completely. They didn’t start that way, though. Stake.us allowed Kentucky users until late 2024. Then things began shifting in July 2025 when Kentucky was officially added to the “Excluded Territories” list.

But aren’t sweepstakes casinos still allowed here?

This part trips people up, and I get why. Yes, sweepstakes casinos are still allowed in Kentucky. Stake.us is just one of the few that voluntarily block the state. That’s because sweepstakes casinos (also called social casinos) don’t fall under traditional gaming laws. They work under a promotional sweepstakes model, which is legal in most U.S. states, including KY, as long as they follow certain rules.

Here’s what those rules usually involve:

  • You get free Gold Coins when you sign up or enter giveaways
  • Some sites offer Stake Cash (or Sweeps Coins) as bonus entries, which can be used to win real prizes after meeting the playthrough and KYC requirements
  • There’s always a no-purchase-necessary option

In Kentucky, sweepstakes contests are monitored by the Office of Charitable Gaming. They don’t actively block this kind of site unless it crosses the line into unlicensed gaming. Compared to how Stake.us is legal in Minnesota, the site can technically operate here. But they’ve chosen not to.

How the Stake.us sweepstakes model works

If you’ve never used Stake.us before and haven’t read our full Stake.us review, here’s the short version of how it all works:

But none of that matters if you’re in Kentucky, because right now, you can’t even get past the login screen.

💰 Two Virtual Currency Coins
  • Gold Coins (GC): These are for fun. You can’t redeem them for prizes. You’ll get them when you sign up, and whenever you buy an optional Gold Coin package.
  • Stake Cash (SC): These are the sweepstakes entries. You can get them through bonuses, giveaways, or bundled with optional GC purchases. You can redeem these for prizes after you play them 3x and meet KYC requirements.

🏆 Prize Redemptions

Once you hit the minimum balance and meet the KYC rules (age, ID check, and selfie verification) in states like Kansas where Stake.us is legal, you can exchange your eligible Stake Cash for a prize, like a gift card or cash prize. Minimums apply, which are usually 100 SC for cash and 50 SC for a gift card.

🛂 ID Rules & Age Limits

In states where Stake.us is legal like Utah, the rules are strict. You have to be at least 18 to use the site (21 in some states), and full identity verification is required before you can redeem any prizes. That means uploading a valid government-issued ID, taking a live selfie to confirm it’s you, and verifying your address.

But none of that matters if you’re in Kentucky, because right now, you can’t even get past the login screen.

Where Stake.us is available

While Kentucky is off-limits and there’s no chance that players can find the sweepstakes casino gaming experience they are looking for, Stake.us is still available in the following states:

Allowed states

Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Restricted states

Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia. Unless you’re in one of these 17 blocked states, you can probably sign up and play with no issues. As long as you meet the minimum age and can pass the ID check.

If you’re in one of the Stake.us legal states like Tennessee listed above, you can get started with Stake.us using our exclusive bonus code. It’s only available in states where Stake.us is allowed, so not for Kentucky, but good to go elsewhere if you’re eligible.

  • Bonus Code: TGTSOCIAL
  • Offer: 560,000 Gold Coins + 56 SC + 5% Rakeback

To unlock this, you’ll need to meet the age requirement, pass identity verification, and complete the standard 3× playthrough on your SC before redeeming any prizes.

Could Stake.us come back to Kentucky?

It’s hard to say. Now that sports betting is legal in Kentucky, there’s at least some momentum around expanding the state’s approach to gaming. A few lawmakers have opened up avenues to look for alternatives in broader online gaming options, including both iGaming and sweepstakes-style sites.

But so far, there’s been no formal push to update or clarify the laws surrounding sweepstakes casinos specifically. The state still tends to treat anything that resembles online casino play with a cautious, and sometimes aggressive, attitude. Given Kentucky’s history of seizing gaming domains and challenging iGaming companies, that hesitation makes sense.

Stake.us, for its part, seems to take a very conservative approach when it comes to legal grey zones, which is a credit to their reputation. So, unless Kentucky authorities launch clear support for sweepstakes models or create a way to make licensing frameworks for sites like Stake.us, it’s unlikely that Stake.us will re-enable access here.

It’s a no for now

If you’re in Kentucky and wondering if you can use Stake.us, the answer right now is simply no. Stake.us blocks access based on both location and ID. Their T&Cs are crystal clear on that. It’s tough luck, but then, we all know how hard it can be to gain access to a state where online gaming is locked out. That said, there’s nothing in Kentucky law that outright bans sweepstakes casinos, and plenty of others still operate here without issue. Stake.us just happens to be extra cautious, and for now, they’ve put Kentucky on ice.

For now, you may want to consider playing Stake.us in other states where it is legal, and when the time comes for Kentucky to legalize online gaming, you can say that it was worth the wait.

FAQ’s

🛑 Can I use Stake.us in Kentucky?

No. Kentucky is currently listed as an excluded state in Stake.us’s terms. You can’t sign up, verify, or access the site from here.

🕵️‍♂️ What happens if I use a VPN?

It’s a breach of their Terms. If they detect it, they can suspend your account and deny redemptions.

Yes, as long as they follow sweepstakes rules and don’t offer real-money gaming.

🔓 Why do other sweepstakes sites still work in KY?

Because they haven’t chosen to block the state. Stake.us has, probably for legal caution reasons.

Maybe, but there’s no timeline. It would likely require some change or clarification in state law.
