Monday Night Football in Detroit! The Lions and Raiders are both coming off bad losses and especially with the Lions, this is a huge game. The Lions looked like a Super Bowl contender up until last weekend’s implosion in Baltimore; this is a must-win for the Lions to prove that last week was a fluke.
Detroit generated pressure at an above-average rate (23.9%, 14th) despite blitzing at one of the lowest rates (19.8%), so utilizing four-man rushes effectively will be critical in this matchup. Garoppolo posted an overall passer rating of 107.1 when not under pressure this season but dropped to 11.0 under duress. Pressure is the key to a Lions victory, create it and you win, don’t create it, and you’re in for a long night.
Goff and his offense only managed to score six points last week – Goff’s worst outing under center since Detroit’s shutout loss against New England in Week 5 of last season. But Goff should rebound at Ford Field against the raiders; his home/road splits are something to keep an eye on Monday; when playing at home, he averages 32.6 points per game with a 110.3 passer rating while throwing 30 touchdown passes and only five interceptions; on the road however, he’s managed 19.7 points on average with an 87.6 passer rating while throwing 10 touchdown passes while 6 interceptions!
The Raiders have not been successful this season without Garoppolo at quarterback, yet his presence under center has led to results in terms of wins in the win column; yet, his play on the field hasn’t always been stellar either, throwing more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns (seven); though at critical moments when needed, he delivered two game-winning drives for Oakland.
History suggests this will indeed be a bounce-back spot for the Detroit Lions. Teams with a winning percentage of 60% or better coming off a loss by 20 or more points are 80-39-1 (67%) ATS since 2003, covering 5.4 points per game. The Lions are the better team and I expect a huge night for Lions Quarterback jared Goff.
