Both teams have disappointed this season as the Chargers are 2-3, and the Cowboys are 3-2. The Cowboys are coming off a 42-10 beating at the hands of the 49ers and the Chargers are coming off a bye week after a win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
After starting the season with two losses, the Chargers rebounded with two straight victories before their bye week. Justin Herbert played well against Oakland as he threw for just 167 yards but still managed a touchdown pass and two runs for touchdowns. Los Angeles QB Matt Stafford has amassed 1,106 yards so far this year, placing him 14th out of 32 QBs; however, unlike all others, he is one of only four QBs to have played only four games this year. Herbert has produced seven touchdown passes against just one interception this season and three with his legs, all while breaking his middle finger throwing hand only – helping the Chargers average 388.8 yards and 27.5 points per game overall while ranking amongst top-10 in both categories.
Kahlil Mack had an outstanding performance in their win over the Raiders, cracking six sacks – his first six this year – the defense allows 404 total yards per game and 26 points on defense (second-most overall).
Last weekend, the Cowboys were utterly overwhelmed by the 49ers. The offense tallied only 197 yards, while the defense yielded 421. Even with such poor play from both ends of the field, however, their defense still manages to rank seventh overall and allow just 16.6 points per game on defense despite giving up 421 total yards altogether in that game. Although their season-high 42 points allowed still left them at seventh overall with 166.1 total yards allowed per game and 15 total sacks tied for ninth position overall, though Brock Purdy managed only once this past Sunday, while the team tied for second place with seven interceptions courtesy of DeRon Bland having made three such interceptions of his own in that match-up. Last weekend, the Dallas offense faced similar difficulties as their defense, scoring only one touchdown on the day. Dak Prescott endured his worst performance of the season – going 14-24 for 153 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions while getting sacked three times; another consecutive week where Dak was hauled down behind the line three times – throwing just one touchdown pass over each of the last three games, finishing 17th overall in passing yards with 1,061.
This game is truly a toss-up; neither QQuarterback has been impressive. I think this will be a mini-shootout like 27-24, and Herbert is a bit better than Prescott, so take the Chargers and the +1.5 points.
