The Jets’ hopes for the season now rest on QB Zach Wilson, which means the hopes are now low in New York. The Patriots’ 0-2 start is not as bad as it may seem as they lost to two good teams, but played well. QB Mac Jones has shown signs of improvement and the defense is a top 10 unit.
New York will rely heavily on a running game which averaged 5.4 yards per rush (second) as they try to gain momentum early on this year. Unfortunately, Zach Wilson still has yet to throw over 200 yards per game and currently has four interceptions, so improvement in the passing game will be crucial in scoring points. Defensively, the New York Jets were among the league’s premier units in 2022. They finished fourth in scoring, fifth in yards and second in yards per play – ranking fourth against scoring, fifth against yards, and second against yards per play against their two opponents: Buffalo Bills in Week 1 and New England last week. Although New York allowed 30 last week against one of those tough opponents (due to four turnovers by their offense), in Week 1, they limited the Bills offense to 16 yards total – impressive.
Two formidable opponents at home recently tested New England and they fell by one possession each time. Now traveling as the favorite team, they face their first test on the road as the Patriots’ defense receives its easiest assignment yet of the season – at least on paper. Last season’s defense finished 11th in scoring, 9th in yards and 5th in yards per play. Through two games this season, New England has surrendered 49 points; at least 24 against each game; they’ve made at least one takeaway each game, which bodes well; against run-heavy Eagles offense they held their ground, while last week saw them defend pass-heavy Dolphins offense admirably with airspace defense in full effect – could this strategy work against Jets on Sunday?
Zach Wilson is just not the answer for the Jets, I expect the Jets defense to keep this game fairly close, but the Patriots win and cover. Patriots 23 Jets 13.
