These teams are bad, and both are playing with backup quarterbacks. The Chargers got embarrassed at home by the Denver Broncos, while the Raiders lost 3-0 to the Minnesota Vikings. This game is so bad that the over/under is 34 points, and that number seems way too high.
Since the merger, six NFL games have ended 3-0 – but neither the Raiders nor Vikings had accomplished this feat. Las Vegas could only muster eight first downs during this game for a total of 202 yards from scrimmage – Aidan O’Connell continued his poor play at quarterback; going 21-32 for 171 yards with one interception against Minnesota, while Jimmy Garappolo has been healthy and scratched recently sat and watched and Aidan O’Connell appears set to start again at quarterback against the Chargers.
O’Connell has played in seven games and averaged 195 yards per game with a 4-7 touchdown-interruption ratio. Given how talented his receiving corps is, the Raiders will need more production from their young quarterback; more than four passing touchdowns should have been scored already. Davante Adams is one of the premier receivers in the league, yet has only posted modest statistics in Las Vegas’ offense. Adams averages 66.7 yards per game with four touchdowns on the year and only has one game with over 100 yards so far this season. Jakobi Meyers is the second wide receiver on the team and adds 51.3 yards per game with six touchdowns. Josh Jacobs leads in terms of rushing with 805 rushing yards this year (tied for second with Tre Tucker who has 63), and Jacobs averages 61.9 yards per game with six touchdowns.
The Chargers have long been known for fielding talented rosters while underachieving in terms of playoff success. Brandon Staley was brought in to end this streak; however, as they currently stand at just 5-8 and 12th in the AFC, he may soon find himself looking elsewhere for work. Losses in four of five games, followed by Justin Herbert’s fractured index finger means rarely used Easton Stick from North Dakota State will take his place as quarterback for this contest.
Easton Stick was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft and has only made two NFL appearances thus far: once back in 2020 and last week against the Denver Broncos. Last week against Denver, he completed 13-24 passes for 179 yards without throwing any touchdowns. He will look to make his mark against the Raiders with his first touchdown pass. Austin Ekeler could play an integral part in this contest for Los Angeles as he averages 49.7 rushing yards per game and five touchdowns while serving as their third-leading receiver with 34.4 yards per game. With Stick at quarterback, expect extra handoffs and screen passes for Ekeler. Keenan Allen has had an exceptional year – ranking fourth overall in total receiving yards while averaging 95.6 yards per game with seven touchdowns. Joshua Palmer remains out, increasing pressure on rookie Quentin Johnston to step up and show why he was selected in the first round.
Bet the under, but when betting the game take the Raiders -3. The Chargers have the worse Quarterback, and the Raiders are at home. Raiders 17 Chargers 6
