The Dolphins are a serious Super Bowl contender; the Jets are not. The Jets defense is good enough to keep them in any game, but the offenses seem to get slightly worse each week. If the Jets have any shot at the playoffs, they must win this game.
Last weekend, New York was humiliated by Buffalo as they held them to a 0-for-11 performance on third down and only 155 total yards. New York managed just 92 passing yards and a 2.6 completion percentage from QB Zach Wilson before benching him after just one series. Tim Boyle will take snaps under center in this Friday’s game against Miami instead – will he provide New York with enough jet fuel to be competitive against Miami? The Jets rank 30th in scoring 15.0 points per game while averaging 270.3 total yards (30th), including 170.5 passing yards (30th) and 99.8 rushing yards (23rd). They convert 22.9 per cent of third down attempts (32nd) and score touchdowns on 26 per cent of red zone trips (32nd).
New York ranks 12th nationally in terms of defense with 20.4 points allowed per game and 316.3 total yards allowed (11th), including 5th-best passing yards (178.7) and 30th-best rushing yards (137.6) per game, among many other stats. They’ve recorded 26 sacks and ten interceptions. Opponents convert 39.6% of third down attempts (20th overall), reaching the red zone 41.33% of time (5th).
Last week, Miami marked their comeback against Las Vegas by outgaining them 422-296 and converting only three out of eleven third-down attempts. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (325 yards on 28 of 39 passes for two touchdowns and an interception) helped ease their loss of running back De’Von Achane after leaving during their second drive; veteran defensive back Jalen Ramsey sealed victory for them, however with an athletic interception on Las Vegas’ final possession to seal victory for Miami.Miami averages 30.5 points per game (1st) and averages 434.0 total yards (1st), including 291.0 passing yards and 144.0 rushing yards. They convert 38.3 percent of third downs (17th), finding the end zone on 75.5 percent of red zone trips (1st).
The Dolphins allow 23.8 points (23rd), and 319.8 total yards (12th) per game, including 220.6 passing yards (14th) and 99.2 rushing yards (10th). Miami has registered 31 sacks and seven interceptions this season; their opponents converted 359 percent of third down attempts (11) while scoring touchdowns on 65.6 percent of red zone visits (29th).
The Jets will have a hard time scoring in double-digits, and while the Jets defense is good, it will eventually break, and the Dolphins will pull away. Miami 30 Jets 10.
