The Packers and Cowboys have played multiple classic playoff games. Will this one live up to the classics? Probably not, but the Cowboys always seem to fail this time of year, and nobody expected the Packers even to make the playoffs. The Cowboys have dominated at home this year, but past playoff history has made Cowboys fans nervous. The Packers have an offense that can put up points on Dallas, but do they have a defense that can compete in this game?
The Dallas Cowboys enter the NFC playoffs as the number two seed. At home this season, they were unbeatable at 8-0 with an average point differential of 21.5, but have struggled on the road, where their record was just 4-5. Under quarterback Dak Prescott is an elite offensive line and one of the premier wide receiving duos in CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, who provided excellent wide receiving numbers throughout. Prescott led his team to 36 touchdowns, throwing over 4,500 yards and setting new team records with 135 receptions totalling over 1700 yards, while Tony Pollard ran for just under 1,000 yards with six touchdowns as an exclusive #1 back.
The Dallas Cowboys’ defense has excelled this season, particularly at home. Micah Parsons led them with 14 sacks. However, injuries plagued their linebacker room, making them susceptible to run plays late in the year. Meanwhile, DaRon Bland led his rookie teammates with nine interceptions, including five returned for touchdowns; ultimately, reaching the Super Bowl may require winning some road games first; until then, they remain comfortable playing at home.
At the outset of this season for the Packers, their story focused on quarterback Jordan Love and his ability to guide them into their next chapter in team history. As they finished 9-8 and earned a wildcard spot while Love was throwing for over 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns. Now, they will get a shot against second-seeded Dallas Cowboys on Sunday for their Wildcard Round matchup. Love boasts an outstanding receiving cast that includes rookie wideout Jayden Reed, who finished the season with nearly 800 yards receiving and eight touchdowns, two quality tight ends in Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave – who combined for almost 65 catches this year; as well as veteran backfield players Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon who seem healthy as they prepare for this matchup.
On defense, the Packers boast two pass rushers, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith, who combined have 17 sacks this season. Furthermore, their secondary has seen several underappreciated talents emerge throughout the year. Still, it will face stiff opposition in Dallas’ elite passing attack – but their defense and quarterback appear ready.
The Cowboys at home could too explosive for a Packers defense with many questions. Green Bay has a chance if they can have a big day running the ball, which is possible. In the end, the Packers offense will dominate this game. Green Bay 38 Dallas 24, Take the Packers and the points and bet the over.
