The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls, while the Houston Texans are looking to pull off a shocking upset. The Chiefs have won close game after close game this season and their starters haven’t played in three weeks after mailing in a season ending loss to the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs will be rusty and if the Texans can get off to a fast start an upset is possible in this game.
In Patrick Mahomes’ first six seasons as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, the team reached six AFC Championship Games. The last time an AFC title game didn’t feature the Chiefs, the starting quarterbacks were Tom Brady and Blake Bortles. It seems almost inevitable that Mahomes and the Chiefs will make it seven for seven. The Texans played well against the Chargers last week, but they finished the second half of the season with a 4-5 record and have already lost once at Arrowhead Stadium this year. The Chiefs only lost one game all season when they were fully trying, and that defeat was against a very strong Buffalo Bills team. While the Chiefs’ pursuit of a third consecutive Super Bowl win hasn’t garnered widespread support among NFL fans, leading to some fatigue regarding Kansas City, their run is unlikely to end this week.
The Texans hold a significant advantage with their edge rushers, Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, who had outstanding seasons. Last week, the Texansβ pass rush performed exceptionally well against the Chargers. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have struggled with their tackle positions on offense throughout the season. The situation became so dire that they moved left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle late in the year. While Thuney played well in that position due to his All-Pro caliber, it is still not his natural role. D.J. Humphries returned from injury to play in Week 18, but he has participated in only two games this season after joining midseason. The Chiefs have not confirmed whether Thuney or Humphries will start at left tackle. Regardless of who starts on the Kansas City offensive line, the Texans must dominate that matchup decisively.
