The National Weather Service in Las Vegas issued a flash flood warning as well as a flood advisory until 12:15 a.m. on Friday as water swamped some of the city’s most famous skyscrapers. The forecaster said that rain is expected to persist throughout the weekend.
Las Vegas has already received 1.28 inches of rain this rainy season. The National Weather Service reported that the current monsoon season has been the wettest in Las Vegas since 2012.
More than 17,500 people in Las Vegas were without power on Thursday night as the downpour continued due to the severe thunderstorms and heavy rain.
In a video shared on social media, floodwater can be seen spilling onto customers in the lodge’s indoor restaurant as Caesar’s Palace struggled to deal with the intense downpour.
Richard Henderson, who was visiting from Canada and was trapped inside Caesar’s Palace when the rain started coming through the ceiling, claimed that in a last-ditch effort, staff members used wet slot machine seats as a temporary barrier to contain a deluge.
“A quick glance to the ceiling and we were shocked to see water pouring out of every sprinkler head and other spots,” Handerson said.
“The sheer amount of water made one of my friends very nervous – she was very concerned about the possibility of more water coming in or a partial ceiling collapse.”
“The lightning strikes were intense,” Henderson said. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it in Vegas.”
Planet Hollywood also sustained significant water damage as a result of the flash floods, with the building filling with water and the carpet fully soaked.
Outside, the city’s roads were virtually impassable for motorists due to floodwater blocking them and police cordoning them off, and authorities cautioned people not to drive in the flooded streets.
Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas reported that within just an hour, 0.58 of an inch of rainfall had descended. Additionally, Thursday was the airport’s wettest day since March 12, 2020. The storms dropped between 0.25 and 0.75 inches of rain on the nearby neighborhoods.
