Boston College Eagles’ quarterback Thomas Castellanos displayed a stellar performance on Saturday’s rainy game against the Army Black Knights. He dominated the ground and secured a 27-24 win with his fourth touchdown.
Castellanos consistently demonstrated his running prowess throughout the game, frequently scrambling to gain yardage when passing opportunities were scarce. Despite facing challenges in passing, the Georgia-born has made history as the first quarterback in Boston College to achieve four rushing touchdowns in a single game.
The recent match marked the 39th time in history that BC and Army face each other. The Eagles came to the game fresh off a comeback win against the Virginia Cavaliers last September, with the exact same winning score of 27-24.
In the game’s early stages, both teams struggled to find success on offense. However, on their second drive, BC began to gain momentum. Thanks to Castellanos’ rushing abilities, BC had a 6-0 lead after a missed PAT by kicker Liam Connor.
In the second quarter, Army had a field goal and reduced BC’s lead to 6-3. While Castellanos’ runs are excellent, his passing performance was erratic, resulting in an interception that gave Army a favorable field position.
Castellanos and running back Pat Garwo contributed to BC’s ground game. Garwo converted crucial fourth downs near the red zone while Castellanos scored his second rushing touchdown. BC extended their lead to 13-3 just before halftime.
Army began the second half with excellent field position, courtesy of a kickoff return to the BC 35-yard line. They capitalized quickly, narrowing the gap to 13-10. BC’s response was swift, as Garwo’s explosive run and Castellanos’s third rushing touchdown reestablished a 20-10 lead. Army mirrored BC’s success with another rushing touchdown, making it a 20-17 game.
BC faced a critical fourth down near midfield as the fourth quarter progressed, and Castellanos was stuffed, placing the burden on their defense. Army advanced down the field but had a touchdown called back due to an illegal forward pass. BC took over near midfield after a poor punt by the Black Knights.
With just 25 left, Castellanos secured his fourth touchdown, putting BC ahead 27-24. Army fumbled on their final possession, which sealed BC’s 27-24 victory.
