Samuel Ogazi Arrives at Hayward Field With a Title to Defend and History to Make

Tonight at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships officially get underway. Men’s Day 1 takes off at 8 PM ET on ESPN, with semifinals for sprint events and finals in select field disciplines on the schedule. This is the 104th edition of the men’s championship, and few national title events in college sports move quite this fast.

The biggest name entering the week belongs to Alabama’s Samuel Ogazi. The 20-year-old Nigerian sprinter arrives as the defending NCAA Outdoor 400m champion, having taken 2025’s title in 44.84 at this same venue to become only the second Nigerian man in history to win the NCAA Outdoor 400m crown. In March, he added the 2026 NCAA Indoor 400m title to his resume, clocking 44.57 in Fayetteville to break the African indoor record. Now he is back in Eugene trying to become one of the few college sprinters to complete an indoor-outdoor championship sweep in the same academic year.

His 2026 outdoor season has only raised expectations further. At the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ogazi ran 43.82 in the 400m, a personal best and a new Nigerian national record that ranks among the fastest 400m times in college track history. Michael Norman’s all-time collegiate record of 43.61, set in 2018, is a real part of the conversation now. After winning his first outdoor title last June, Ogazi said, “I’ve worked so hard, and I’m just getting started.” Given where his times have gone since, that line lands differently in hindsight.

A championship sweep is not handed to anyone on a platter, though. The 400m field in Eugene this week is loaded, and Ogazi will need to handle his semifinal tonight before he gets to Friday’s final. Georgia’s Jonathan Simms, who battled Ogazi at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial in Athens back in May and was awarded the win by five-thousandths of a second with both men clocking 44.02, will also be in the semis tonight. Anyone sharing that track with Ogazi already knows what they are up against.

There is also a team race unfolding over these four days. Arkansas won the men’s indoor national title earlier this year and will push hard to carry that momentum into the outdoor season. Oregon, the home program at Hayward, finished runner-up in both men’s and women’s indoor standings, and the crowd they bring in, Eugene, is unlike anything in college track, which makes this particular outdoor meet feel different from most.

Wednesday’s session also includes early hammer throw finals and other field events, where teams start building toward the team title long before the track heats reach their most dramatic moments.

The main Television coverage kicks off at 8 PM ET on ESPN. And with Ogazi headlining the track semis and the team title already taking shape from the afternoon field events tonight, this is where the week begins in earnest.
