New South Wales has approved the Casino Legislation Amendment Bill 2022. According to officials, the legislation will ensure that the casino operators do not commit any harmful acts such as money laundering or terrorism. The creation of a legal gambling industry also involves protecting users and controlling gambling operators.
For practical business activities, the law requires gambling operators not to put explicit advertisements that encourage people to gamble. It includes persuading new users to create an account, offering special odds, and accepting more than AU$1,000 (approximately US$712,014) cash per day from a user for wagering purposes.
The New South Wales state minister for hospitality and racing, Kevin Anderson, said that the new regulation would prevent users from losing money on gambling.
“The public is tired of scandals from casinos,” Anderson said. “They are tired of casinos failing to achieve the bare minimum required of them under the law. They are tired of promises from casinos to do better. We need to see casinos actually do better.”
Moreover, Anderson also expressed his optimism about the new regulation. He said that the new amendment guarantees gambling activities to operate with clear legality.
“This marks a new era in the way casinos in NSW are allowed to operate, with new comprehensive measures targeting key issues such as money laundering and other criminal activity,” he said.
“This essential reset will give the people of NSW confidence that the State’s casino operators will be held to the highest possible standards.”
The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) considers these to be easy paths to gambling-related harm. The regulation also specified the CCTV usage for conducting monitoring and surveillance of operations in the casino.
Wesley Mission, an Australian non-profit organization, said that the newly-approved law would protect people from gambling harm.
Meanwhile, the organization’s general manager John Wackett said that many people think that the social costs of casinos should be taken as seriously as money laundering.
“Failing to include measures to reduce and prevent the harm caused by gambling in casinos denies the lived experience of hundreds of thousands of people harmed by gambling in NSW,” Wackett said.
“Research shows that well over 50 percent of profits in any gambling venue come from people experiencing harm,” he added. No other industry would be allowed to profit from misery in this way.”
