Following the announcement of the closure of Red Rock Resorts’ two Station Casino properties last week, North Las Vegas Democratic mayoral candidate Pat Spearman proposed alternative plans that will displease some.
According to Spearman, there are male-oriented facilities for military veterans in Clark County, but none are specifically built for the needs of females. She also told the media that she would like Texas Station to be donated to help women in the military.
“Let’s consider instead of tearing these properties down, retrofitting them number one for women veterans and everything that they need. We’ve never done that,” the Nevada state senator said. “There are a lot of facilities erected for men, but we’ve never done anything for women.”
Three Station Casinos properties have closed since the COVID pandemic ended in March 2020 and will not reopen. The Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Fiesta Henderson are all scheduled to be demolished, and the land will be sold.
The properties have remained closed since March 17, 2020, when Governor Steve Sisolak issued a closure order. Although casinos were given permission to reopen on June 4, they did not.
Spearman also proposed that the Fiesta Rancho property be used as a training facility for those who have lost their jobs as a result of technological advancements in recent years.
The parent company for the properties, Red Rock Resorts (RRR), on the other hand, want to reinvest the proceeds from the land sales of the three casinos for future projects. They announced plans to build Durango Station late last year. The company began construction on the property earlier this year.
North Las Vegas Mayor John Jay Lee intends to step down at the end of his term in early 2023. Lee had the option of running for re-election after an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in Nevada earlier this year.
On November 8, 2022, Lee’s replacement will be chosen. Spearman is running against North Las Vegas councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown, a Democrat. When asked about Spearman’s plan, Brown said, “It is too early to comment on the subject.”
