Legal sports betting in Ohio is set to go live on January 1 2023. This covers both physical and online sportsbooks and it marks a fast turnaround since the decision was approved in August 2022. The Ohio Casino Control Commission has been given the task of overseeing all forms of gambling in the state. This means issuing licenses to all of the online sportsbooks and regulating their activity.
Many of the best US sports betting sites have announced their intentions to set up shop in the Buckeye State. These include major US brands like FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, and BetMGM. In addition to this, Bet365 represents just one of the many foreign-owned sportsbooks who have set up shop in the US.
Other brands who have been approved for mobile betting by the Ohio Casino Control Commission include Fanatics, Betr, BetParx, Hard Rock, Tipico, BetRivers, and Gamewise.
There is currently the scope for there to be anywhere up to 25 online sportsbooks in the Buckeye State. In addition to this, there could be 40 licensed physical sportsbooks in Ohio, as well as a large number of bars and restaurants that could get a license to run a small sports betting outlet.
Players in Ohio can also look forward to picking up a number of sportsbook offers if they sign up early to a number of the approved sports betting platforms. Here are just some of the prelaunch deals currently available:
It’s been a long process to launch legal sports betting in the Buckeye State. While the Ohio sports betting bill HB29 was passed in the Ohio Legislature in late 2021, it has taken nearly two years to come into action. In order to be ready for the January 1 2023 launch, online sportsbooks will have had to submit their applications by July 15 2022.
Each online sportsbook has had to partner up with an Ohio casino or sporting organization in order to operate in the Buckeye State. So far, there has been the likes of Bally Bet teaming up with the Cleveland Browns, Bet365 partnering with the Cleveland Guardians, and Betfred joining forces with Cincinnati Bengals.
Until New Year’s Day, all forms of online sports betting apart from horse racing betting are still illegal in Ohio. Daily fantasy sports have been legal in Ohio since 2018.
But when the New Year begins, anyone aged 21 years or older and based in Ohio will be able to bet on sports. These include all major sports as well as college sports. There will be a requirement to verify your location and date of birth during the sportsbook registration process. So get your betting picks ready and prepare to enjoy legal sports betting in Ohio.
