Kansas revealed September sports wagering revenue at Wednesday’s Kansas Lottery Commission meeting. The six licensed sportsbook operators have generated $1,3 million in revenue, with $130,000 going into tax.
The state law passed this year in Kansas allows the operators to write off their promotional credits as income for tax purposes.
“We’re told by the industry this is normal at start-up and, keep in mind, this is one month,” Kansas Lottery gaming facilities director Keith Kocher said. “We’re still going through player acquisition and building a database of players as we go along. We’re assured by the casinos and all the experts that, ‘Hey, this is normal.’”
Kansas allowed FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook, and PointsBet to operate in the state on September 8. The operators promoted their service to establish their presence throughout the state.
According to Fiona Simmons of Gambling News, it is not yet clear if their effort bears any result without looking at the data. With only 3 million people, Kansas is not the most populated state. Regardless, Simmons said that Kansas had a chance to have a thriving sports gambling industry.
Kansas Lottery executive director Stephen Durrell said that data gained in September showed the potential of future sports betting in Kansas.
“Sports betting has successfully kicked off in Kansas, and players could not be more excited to get in on the action,” Durrell said.
Durrell congratulated the achievements of stakeholders during the limited time they had. He asserted that the Kansas Lottery would not stop ensuring a safe environment for sports bettors.
“The launch went smoothly, and everyone did their part as expected,” Durrell added.
The current Kansas sports betting law imposes a 10 percent tax on retail and online sports betting. Kansas aims to use 80 percent of this money to entice professional sports teams of the state under the “Attracting Professional Sports in Kansas” plan.
