Dan Campbell spent much of Tuesday’s press conference praising Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. Campbell believes Goff has become an even stronger passer since joining his current team, the Lions.
“I think what you’re seeing is a guy who just put his head down and went back to work, worked on what he could, tried to improve on what he could,” Campbell said. “And now his confidence has really grown. And along the way, he’s really matured as a quarterback. He’s a better quarterback than he was there [in Los Angeles], in my opinion — because he can do more things. He’s mentally on it.
Two seasons ago, the Lions attempted a reset by trading star quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff and multiple first-round draft picks. It has worked as Goff has improved and the draft picks acquired in that trade have helped turn the Lions into a Super Bowl contender.
Goff struggled during 2021 as a starter and finished with a 3-10-1 record as a starter for the Lions, however, in 2022, things improved considerably, with them going 9-8 and narrowly missing playoff contention.
According to Campbell, Goff has come a long way since joining the Lions, and Campbell believes he has shown “significant progress.”
“We’ve come light years ahead of where he was two years ago,” he continued. “He’s got a real good grasp of what we’re doing, where the issues are, where the problems are and that’s something that we really wanted him to get good at and he wanted to get good at and he’s worked at it, and he’s improved.”
Many viewed Goff as a bridge quarterback when he was traded to Detroit; however, he has proven his worth over time in Detroit.
Goff set the Lions’ record for the highest touchdown-to-interception ratio (4.14) during 2022 with 4,438 yards, 29 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions in an extraordinary year.
Goff still has two years left on his four-year, $134,000,000 deal. If he leads Detroit back into contention for another playoff appearance since 2000, there’s a good chance they may consider signing him to an extension – something unimaginable two seasons ago.
The Lions look on the cusp of Super Bowl contention and if Jared Goff gets them there he will be one rich man.
