In the UFC Fight Night main event in Las Vegas on Saturday night, middleweights Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori faced off in a pivotal matchup. After a hard-fought battle, Cannonier emerged victorious with a clear unanimous decision.
With this win, Cannonier has reestablished his position as a top contender in the 185-pound division and is one step closer to re-challenge current champion Israel Adesanya.
βMy ultimate goal is to secure the title shot,β Cannonier said at the end of the fight. βThatβs precisely why Iβm hereβto claim the title. I am fully prepared and eager to seize the opportunity if any circumstances arise that could lead me to that championship bout.β
The winner of the UFC 290 bout between Discus Du Plessis and former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker had originally been confirmed by the UFC as the next contender for Adesanya.
Following this, the victor of the Vettori vs. Cannonier bout appeared to be next in line, as both fighters had previously fallen short in their attempts to dethrone the Nigerian-New Zealand champion.
Vettori and Cannonier share many similarities, including their experiences against the same opponents and their close rankings in the 185-pound division. While their individual attributes and fighting styles may differ, both fighters share a common goal, which is to regain a shot at the middleweight title.
In the early stages of the fight, both fighters landed deep punches, but neither could secure a quick knockout. While Cannonier had heavier striking power, Vettori chose to engage in a striking-focused battle.
During the opening round, Vettori capitalized on opportunities when Cannonier was unmoving within punching range. However, the 39-year-old altered the course of the fight in the second round by delivering powerful blows.
Throughout the 25 minutes, the fight predominantly unfolded on the feet, interrupted only by occasional takedowns by Cannonier. After the intense battle, the judgesβ scorecards displayed unanimous decisions of 49-45, 49-46 and 48-46, all favoring the American fighter.
