It has been nearly a month after the jackpot was announced, Mega Millions is still waiting for a winner to claim his $1,34 billion prize. On July 29, an Illinois player hit the jackpot by matching all six numbers plus the golf ball, but up to this point the winner’s true identity remains unknown.
According to Mega Millions’ representative, the winning numbers 13, 36, 45, 57, and 67 and a gold Mega Ball of 14 was sold at a Speedway gas station in Des Plaines, Illinois.
The Illinois Lottery director Harold Mays said that there is a possibility that the winner has no idea that he won the prize. He then encouraged people to take a look at their ticket to make sure if they have won the prize or not.
“We don’t know whether or not they even know that they won a prize,” Mays said. “So, I encourage everybody to check your ticket.”
Furthermore, Mays asserted that the situation is normal given the prize amount.
“For a prize of this magnitude, it’s not unusual for the winner to take a while to claim,” explained Mays. “I’m sure they’re going through a range of emotions.”
He later gave the winner three pieces of advice if they show intention to show up in public.
According to Mays, the winner can sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe place. The other option is to seek advice from a professional or call the Lottery Player Hotline at 1 (800) 252-1775 to set up a private appointment to claim the prize.
Mays also said that the rules make it possible for the winner to remain anonymous to protect his privacy.
“We will work closely with the winner to respect any wishes for privacy and support them in any way we can to provide a positive winning experience,” Mays added.
