Deshaun ‘Watson”s hearing before the NFL Players Association and NFL Players Association’s jointly appointed disciplinary officer, Sue L. Robinson, is set to start Tuesday, league sources said. Check out the top new sportsbooks for betting on the NFL.
The NFLPA defends Watson, the Cleveland Browns QB, accused of harassing and assaulting 26 women at massage appointments while he was with the Houston Texans. Robinson will listen as the NFL plans to press for a “lengthy suspension” for Watson. One source says that the NFL will likely base its proposed discipline only on a small fraction of the women’s testimony because it could not speak with many women who had interacted with Watson.
Watson was facing 24 civil lawsuits. These included sexual assault allegations and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions. He settled 20 of these suits.
Robinson does not have a track record in ruling on cases involving NFL athletes. However, one source indicated that her decision could be made within one week. But it might also take until training camp. The NFL is hoping for clarification on the case before training camp starts in late July.
Watson can appeal once Robinson has ruled. Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, could decide on Robinson’s appeal or call for an independent judge.
Robinson, a Delaware District Court member for over 25 years, is now one of the most influential people in the 2022 NFL season. Robinson has primarily worked on cases involving patent litigation, including the billion-dollar stent litigation. However, she also dealt with numerous trademark infringements and antitrust issues.
She was the first woman chief judge in the District of Delaware and was also selected for the Judicial Conference of the United States.
This seems to get more complicated everyday.
