On June 11, 2022, Daniel Dubois knocked out Trevor Bryan at the Casino Miami in Florida with an impressive display of skill. Dubois won the fake WBA “regular” heavyweight belt with a striking knockout. The regular belt means nothing except fighters fighting for it have to pay sanctioning fees.
The 24-year-old boxer from Great Britain dominated Bryan in the fourth round to earn his career-high 18th victory. While there were only 500 people attending the Casino Miami to see Dubois take command of the match from the start, his attention was totally on getting the job done.
Dubois had a record of 17-1 and 16 KOs when he stepped into the ring. Bryan, on the other hand, entered the fight with a record of 15-0 and seven knockouts.
He’s one step closer to a shot at the world heavyweight belt after this win. He is now required to fight for the more prestigious WBA “super” title held by the unified champion against the winner in a rematch game between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk in mid-August, most likely in Saudi Arabia. The problem there is that the winner of Joshua/Usyk will then move on to fight Tyson Fury.
“Now I can make some massive fights in the future,” Dubois said. “I am so grateful for this moment. Bring them all on, I am ready.”
Bryan didn’t do anything in the first round while Dubois hit a couple of jabs. The British fighter soon ramped it up, and in the third round, he threw a bunch of punches to the head and body.
“I was just trying to figure him out in the first round,” Dubois said to BT Sport. “I wanted to see what he had, I tested the chin and then went for it.
Then, in the fourth round, the 32-year-old American boxer was knocked off balance by a strong punch. Dubois saw this as an opportunity to end the fight and knocked Bryan out with a hard left hook.
“It was a perfect ending and I am so happy,” Dubois added. “I think this will make me instantly a better fighter already.”
Dubois may not receive a shot at Usyk or Joshua in the near future, since the victor of the unification event will likely seek an uncontested bout for all four belts, including WBA ‘super’, WBO belts and IBF. Tyson Fury is the WBC champion but has stated that he intends to retire from boxing.
Dubois could instead fight against the winner between Hughie Fury and Michael Hunter to remain in the “regular” title. On July 2, the two will square off in an elimination match at AO Arena in Manchester. Both Fury and Hunter aren’t ranked by Ring Magazine right now, but BoxRec says they are two of the 20 best heavyweights in the world. Hunter is a top 20 heavyweight, but Hughie Fury is not, but he does have the right last name.
Joseph Parker was also mentioned by Dubois after the battle. Unprecedented and unexpected, this match has appeared out of nowhere. As a former WBO heavyweight champion who just inked a long-term deal with Sky Sports and BOXXER, Parker has notable victories over Hughie Fury, Andy Ruiz Jr., and Derek Chisora. Parker would be a great test for Dubois who the one time he stepped up in competition was in his only loss to Joe Joyce. Dubois is a young fighter though and if he can keep improving he could be a dangerous fight for anybody.
Dubois has previously claimed that he would be open to meeting Dillian Whyte, but his words were recently quashed by Whyte’s brother Dean, who mentioned that Dubois is not on Whyte’s caliber, which is hilarious being that Whyte is just an average fighter who in his two steps up in competition was easily beaten by Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. It would be a solid test for the young Dubois though.
I would think that the fight Dubois would want would be a rematch against Joe Joyce, which would show us if that lone loss was a help or a hindrance to his career?
