The NHL’s championship trophy will rest in the United States once again in 2022. The Colorado Avalanche swept the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 in the Western Conference Finals on home ice on Monday, ending Canada’s Stanley Cup hope. The country will have to wait until next season for another shot at a championship, while the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning are fighting for the Eastern Conference crown. There is no doubt that ice hockey is Canada’s game. However, the Cup has been won by the United States for almost three decades. The US has taken total control of the NHL and the Stanley Cup, although Canada was dominant in the early days of the league, up until the 1980s.
Canada only hosts seven of the 32 NHL teams, making it unlikely to host a championship. The reason for a drought in championships becomes even clearer considering the playoff history of those teams.
The last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was 29 years ago. In the 1993 Stanley Cup Final, the Montreal Canadiens won the trophy against the Los Angeles Kings four games to one. Since then, an American team won the championship every year.
Below is the list of the last time Canadian teams clinched the Stanley Cup trophy:
– Montreal Canadiens in 1993 (vs. Kings in five games)
– Edmonton Oilers in 1990 (vs. Bruins in five games)
– Calgary Flames in 1989 (vs. Canadiens in six games)
– Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967 (vs. Canadiens in six games)
– Ottawa Senators: Never
– Vancouver Canucks: Never
– Winnipeg Jets: Never
In 2021, the Canadiens were inches away from victory, but they fell to the Lightning in a gentleman’s sweep during the Stanley Cup Final. Long before that, Canada’s last Cup Final appearance was in 2011 when the Vancouver Canucks made it.
Below are the last Cup Final appearances by Canadian teams:
– Montreal Canadiens in 2021 (five-game loss to Lightning)
– Vancouver Canucks in 2011 (seven-game loss to Bruins)
– Ottawa Senators in 2007 (five-game loss to Ducks)
– Edmonton Oilers in 2006 (seven-game loss to Hurricanes)
– Calgary Flames in 2004 (seven-game loss to Lightning)
– Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967 (six-game victory over Canadiens)
– Winnipeg Jets: Never
The Canadian hockey team has won 49 Stanley Cups since 1918. In addition to the four current NHL teams that have won the Cup, Canada also has two championships won by the Montreal Maroons, who played from 1924 to 1938.
The US didn’t surpass Canada in the overall tally until the Washington Capitals triumphed in 2018. After the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, it will reach its 54th victory.
The Detroit Red Wings set out to end a 42-year Stanley Cup drought 25 years ago, in the spring of 1997.
Three games to none gave the Wings complete control over the Philadelphia Flyers, a once favored team but falling deeper into disarray over time. The Wings were expected to win. They were confident, but they also expected the Flyers to put forth their best effort.
The Stanley Cup trophy was transported from the Renaissance Center to Joe Louis Arena shortly after the opening match. The Wings ended their 42-year Cup drought when they defeated Flyer 2-1. Commissioner Gary Bettman presented the trophy to Wings Captain Steve Yzerman, who smiled as he raised it.
The Red Wings have been without the Cup for 42 years, six years longer than the Chicago Blackhawks. Their last Cup came just two years prior to the Detroit Lions’ last NFL championship.
