On Sunday, the Democratic Party in California said it would back several ballot measures, but not the two in November that would legalize sports betting.
The Democrats, who control the legislative and executive branches in the state, voted against Proposition 27. The Prep 27 would make online sportsbooks legal in the state if passed and the Dems are still not saying anything about Proposition 26 that would let people bet on sports in person at tribal casinos and horse-racing tracks.
But supporters of Proposition 26, which only allowed sales in stores and was backed by tribes, saw this as a win. According to Covers, even though the Democrats won’t support the plan, it looks like they will at least stop fighting against it.
The tribal chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reid Milanovich said in a press release that California Democrats’ vote against Prop 27 was a rejection of corporations from out of state and a reaffirmation of their commitment to the state’s Indian tribes.
It’s unclear whether voters will agree with either of the two sports betting proposals. Proposition 27 may not have the support of state Democrats, but it has a lot of money from big sportsbooks like BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel.
People who support the online-betting initiative say that it would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year in taxes that the state could use to help pay for temporary and permanent housing. If the bill passes, it will make it possible to bet on sports online through partnerships with Native American tribes.
But for the naysayers, Proposition 27 would make people more likely to become addicted and the state could not supervise young people under 18 in online gambling.
“Prop 27 is not a solution to anything,” Milanovich said in the press release, as per Covers. “It would expose children to a massive expansion of gambling and turn every cell phone, gaming console, tablet and laptop into a gambling device. Prop 27 is a direct attack on tribal gaming and Indian self-reliance.”
