West Virginia won every time it ran 200 yards or more last season, and their ground game should continue to improve this year.
Last season, there were many issuesâdefense was subpar, and turnover margin was a major problemâyet in an expanding conference with all of its focus and attention on expansion, new programs, and everyone else, suddenly comes a running game that should present significant problems.
Along the offensive line, experience and all-conference-caliber talent abound, while the running backs are superb. If they all come together, controlling both the clock and the game is realistic.
Michigan was the only team to surpass 200 rushing yards against Penn State last season; their 2023 group should be even stronger.
The defense will be aggressive – excelling at getting into the backfield – and should once more rank amongst the top ten run defense units, thanks to its talented linebacking corps and wide array of offensive playmakers up front.
On the other hand, Penn State boasts the young skill parts to do damage against any opponent. West Virginia benefited from transfer portal help in the secondary, but their front seven must hold up after being overmatched against efficient passing teams that have difficulty creating big plays.
Penn State was 10th nationally in turnover margin, while West Virginia University came in 118th – so any mistakes from either team should not cause too much drama in Saturday’s match-up.
