This is a rematch from last season which saw the Gators upset the highly-ranked Utes. Can Florida pull it off again? It will be harder as the scene has shifted to Utah where the Utes are almost unbeatable.
The Utes ended their year with a 10-4 mark, and their last game saw them lose against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Rose Bowl. Bryson Barnes (1 touchdown) completed 112 yards through the air while maintaining a QB rate of 109 in this matchup. Utah quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson had one interception and averaged 5.9 yards per attempt during this match-up for Utah. Additionally, Utah ran 83 plays at an average pace of 4.7 yards per play to finish with 391 total yards for their opponents to cover in this contest. Utah averaged 4.3 yards per attempt while amassing 184 yards on 43 attempts, conceding 31 rush attempts for 169 yards (5.5 per rush attempt) against their defense and giving up 279 yards via 16 of 22 passes completed successfully by opponents.
Utah’s issue at the moment will be who will play quarterback. Cam Rising is still questionable and his backup is banged up.
The Florida Gators finished 2022 with a 6-7 record, losing their final match-up with the Oregon State Beavers by 30-3. Jack Miller III connected on 13/18 yards through the air for a touchdown. He earned a quarterback rating of 127.8, finishing without throwing any interceptions. Trevor Etienne led Gators rushing efforts with eight attempts for 14 yards at an average of 1.8 per attempt. Overall, their 55 plays totalled 219 yards. The Florida Gators ran the ball 33 times for 39 yards, an average of 1.2 per tote. Their running game gave up 164 yards on 39 attempts – that works out to an average of 4.2 per run conceded. Florida also allowed 17 pass completions out of 26 attempts totalling 189 yards with an incredible completion rate of 65.4%. They did play without their starting quarterback Anthony Richardson who chose to sit the game out to await the NFL draft.
The Florida Gators amassed 5,513 total yards last season. Florida recorded 18 pass touchdowns and 29 ground touchdowns; giving away 14 times to their opponents; collecting 260 first downs overall while being charged with 88 infractions totalling 651 yards; with an average 200.2-yard per game rushing average, ranking them 24th in D-1; while also scoring an average of 29.5 points per game when it came to endzone wins.
For passing yardage, Florida was ranked 86th overall in college football. They allowed 3,065 yards through 13 games played with an average completion percentage of 60.7%, allowing an average of 235.8 passing yards per contest at 60.7% completion percentage with 17 passing touchdowns and 29 rushing touchdowns given up while also giving up 411.0 total yard/outing that placed them 97th nationwide; these statistics translate to 17 passing touchdowns as well as 29 rushing touchdowns given up and 175.2 total rushing yards/outing which totalled 2,278 overall and put them 87th on team defense with 28.8 points allowed per game against them through 13 contests played last season compared with last season’s rankings, thus ranking them as well.
The Utah lines will dominate the game on both sides and the Utes will slowly pull away. Take the Utes and give the points.
