The 2025 JLab Birmingham Bowl delivers one of the most unusual — and emotionally charged — matchups of bowl season. A rematch of the bitter “Deeper Than Hate” rivalry, this game exists only because multiple bowl-eligible teams declined invitations, opening the door for 5–7 Appalachian State to receive a second chance against Georgia Southern.
For the Mountaineers, it’s a pride game — a reward for seniors who chose to finish the season against their most hated rival. For Georgia Southern, it’s an opportunity to settle unfinished business after nearly blowing a 19-0 lead in their November win and to finally earn head coach Clay Helton his first bowl victory in Statesboro.

App State’s roster looks dramatically different from the team that nearly stole the first meeting. Both quarterbacks J.J. Kohl and A.J. Swann — who threw for 350 yards against Georgia Southern in November — are now in the transfer portal.
While head coach Dowell Loggains has left the door open for portal players to suit up, the likely starter is true freshman Noah Gillon, a massive downgrade in experience for a rivalry rematch.
The Mountaineers are also missing key contributors on both sides of the ball, including leading tackler D.J. Burks (S) and wide receiver Davion Dozier. That said, Loggains confirmed several seniors chose to play specifically because the opponent is Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern enters with a significant advantage: roster stability. The Eagles have seen almost no portal attrition among starters.
Offensively, RB O.J. Arnold and WR Dalen Cobb, who missed the regular-season finale, are expected to return. Defensively, the Eagles bring back the same unit that forced App State into early mistakes in November.
That continuity matters in bowl season — especially in rivalry games.
Georgia Southern’s offense is built on balance and pressure. In the first meeting, the Eagles dominated early before stalling on third down and letting App State back into the game.
The advantage lies in the secondary. With App State’s quarterback room depleted, expect JC French IV to attack aggressively against a Mountaineer defense missing its top safety.
Without Swann or Kohl, App State’s path is narrow. The Mountaineers must lean heavily on RB Rashod Dubinion against a Georgia Southern defense that allows 220+ rushing yards per game.
To stay competitive, App State must shorten the game, avoid turnovers, and generate emotion-driven momentum — a tall order with a freshman quarterback under center.
JC French IV (Georgia Southern, QB) — Faces a depleted secondary with experience and chemistry on his side.
Rashod Dubinion (App State, RB) — The focal point of the Mountaineer offense.
O.J. Arnold (Georgia Southern, RB) — Expected to return and stabilize the rushing attack.
Noah Gillon (App State, QB) — True freshman thrust into a rivalry bowl start.
With App State missing its top safety and both primary quarterbacks, Georgia Southern should find consistent scoring opportunities.
French is set up for a clean pocket and favorable matchups against a depleted Mountaineer secondary.
Even in a losing effort, App State will ride Dubinion heavily to protect its freshman quarterback.
The Eagles’ roster continuity and quarterback advantage outweigh rivalry unpredictability in this rematch.
Spread: Georgia Southern -7.5
Moneyline: Georgia Southern -230
Over/Under: 59.5
Rivalry emotion keeps Appalachian State competitive early, but roster attrition eventually tells the story. Georgia Southern’s stability, quarterback play, and depth prove decisive in the second half.
Final Score: Georgia Southern 38, Appalachian State 21
