We hear every year that this is the year that the Texas Longhorns will be back, and finally, it seems true as the Longhorns have made the College Football playoffs. Quinn Ewers has been excellent this season. The Washington Huskies are a fun team to watch, exciting on offense and defense, but maybe the most impressive thing about this Husky team is the resilience they play with. Michael Pennix has been fantastic this season, and the Huskies are a legitimate threat in this game.
Texas shook off a loss to #12 Oklahoma during the Red River Rivalry by winning seven consecutive games, culminating with an emphatic win against Oklahoma State (#18 in the Big 12 title game) to secure their spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Texas enters this matchup 12-1 overall and 8-1 in their final conference season before joining the SEC next year. Texas started strong against Oklahoma State by leaping ahead 14-0 within seven minutes and never looked back as they eventually cruised to a victory. Texas was in control from start to finish, leading 21-7 after the first quarter, 35-14 at halftime and 42-14 after three quarters before eventually winning 44-14. Texas amassed 662 yards total offense and an astounding 33-13 first down margin; their time of possession margin dominated 40:06-19:54 while they forced two turnovers while only committing one.On average, Texas Longhorns rank 18th nationally for passing offense, averaging 286.8 yards per contest through the air; they rank 24th for their rushing attack by amassing 188.1 yards per contest on the ground. Texas currently ranks 16th in FBS scoring offense at an average of 36.2 points per game while also boasting 12th in scoring defense, giving up 17.5 points a contest. Quinn Ewers completed 248 of 351 passes for 3,161 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions while adding 21 yards and five scores on the ground this season. Maalik Murphy (40 of 71 for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions) and Arch Manning (2 of 5, 30 yards) followed. Jonathon Brooks leads the team on the ground, amassing 1,139 yards through 187 carries with 10 touchdowns on this season alone. CJ Baxter (129 carries, 595 yards, and four touchdowns) and Jaydon Blue (56 carries for 339 yards and two touchdowns) have also proven effective when given opportunities. Xavier Worthy leads his team with 73 receptions for 969 yards and five touchdowns this season. Adonai Mitchell (51 receptions, 813 yards and 10 touchdowns), Ja’Tavion Sanders (39 catches, 607 yards, two touchdowns), Jordan Whittington (38 grabs, 435 yards and two TDs), Brooks (25 receptions, 286 yards and two touchdowns) are among those over 200 receiving yards this season. Bert Auburn has made all 52 extra point attempts and 28 of 34 field goal attempts with one long of 54 this year!
Washington defeated Oregon for the second time this season to capture the Pac-12 Championship and move on to Big Ten membership next season. This year, Washington entered this matchup 13-0 overall and 9-0 within their league. Washington’s win against Oregon began promisingly: they led 10-0 after one quarter, 20-10 at halftime and 24-20 after three before recovering and eventually coming out victorious. Washington took control of this game after Dillon Johnson scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 12:23 remaining, expanding their advantage by 10 points with 2 minutes 44 to go before running out the clock after Oregon made it a three-point game again. Washington held an advantage in total offense, picking up 26 first downs while only giving up 17, and controlling time by 37:08 minutes to 22 minutes52; both teams turned over once during this matchup.This season, the Huskies lead all colleges in passing offense at 343.8 yards per game while ranking 100th in rushing with 125.2 yards per contest. Washington ranks 10th in scoring offense with 37.7 points per game and 51st in scoring defense with an average of 23.6 allowed per contest. Michael Penix Jr. has completed 307 of 466 passes for 4,218 yards with 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions while also scoring three times on the ground. Dylan Morris (9 of 14, 224 yards, TD/INT) has seen limited work at quarterback. Dillon Johnson leads the team on the ground this season with 201 carries for 1,113 yards and 14 scores on just 201 attempts, followed by Tybo Rogers (38 carries, 163 yards) and Will Nixon (31 carries, 194 yards, 1 touchdown). Jalen McMillan ranks fourth on his team with 34 receptions for 468 yards and three scores this year in terms of passing game production. Ja’Lynn Polk (60 grabs, 1000 yards and eight touchdowns), Germie Bernard (31 catches, 371 yards, two touchdowns), Jack Westover (332 yards receiving – four TDs) and Rome Odunze (81 catches – 1428 yards – 13 touchdowns) all surpass 300-yard receiving mark this season. Grady Gross hit all 58 extra points as well as 13 of 17 field goal attempts with his longest of 47 this year while Addison Shrock attempted only an extra point attempt before not making this season – Grady scored all 58 extra points whereas Addison Shrock hit just one extra point attempt; however he did not attempt a field goal attempt this season.
Washington has played the tougher schedule and this is not a typical West Coast team, this Husky team is tough, hard-nosed, and physical. Take the points and the Husky’s. Washington 31 Texas 27.
