Even though the 1.25-mile track is new to the Cup Series, it is not new to the drivers who are already in the Cup Series. There have been Xfinity Series races for Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, and Brad Keselowski.
Harvick, Bubba Wallace, Cole Custer, Christopher Bell, Justin Haley, and Ross Chastain are the six past Truck Series winners who are also on the grid for Gateway’s race.
In 2014, Custer won his first Truck Series pole at the World Large Expertise Raceway. A year later, he won the race from the second starting position. Since then, the egg-shaped speedway, which is similar to Darlington except that it doesn’t have as much banking, has been repaved.
“It provides you a little bit of confidence,” Custer mentioned of his historical past at Gateway. “I haven’t run the race since 2016, I feel, so I’ve by no means run on the repave. In order that’s going to be attention-grabbing, however, I type of know the concept of the course.
Custer just had a good race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he finished in the top five before a late-race accident eliminated him.
“One finish is extraordinarily tight… after which you’ve gotten the opposite finish that’s actually just like perhaps New Hampshire or Phoenix (Turns) 1 and a pair of, the place it’s actually extensive and sweeping, so simply type of should get used to the repave,” Custer said.
“I feel I’ve thought of the race observe from utilizing the Ford simulator, however, the repave is unquestionably going to be completely different than what I used to be used to.”
At the moment, Custer is twenty-seventh in the standings, so he will almost certainly need to win at least one of the next 12 races to get into the Cup Series Playoff.
On Saturday, the NASCAR Xfinity Series goes to Portland, Oregon, for the Pacific Workplace Automation 147 at Portland Worldwide Raceway.
The race is the series’ first visit to the 1.967-mile, 12-turn highway course, which runs clockwise. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series raced on the track in 1999 and 2000, with Greg Biffle and Andy Houston winning the two races.
AJ Allmendinger, who won earlier this season at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, is the clear favorite in Portland. Certainly, Allmendinger has a track record in Oregon.
“I’m actually trying ahead to going again to Portland,” Allmendinger said. “Final time I used to be there was 16 years in the past once I was capable of winning my first Champ Automobile race.”
Whatever the outcome, Allmendinger’s weekend promises to be exciting, as he will compete in the NASCAR Cup Series debut race at World Large Expertise Raceway on Sunday—with no prior laps in the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet.
“It’s going to be really particular to return to the observe for the primary time since then, and I feel we are going to [be] placed on an incredible race for the Xfinity Series.”
