A Swede won the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in its history. Marcus Ericsson, a 31-year-old driver from Kumla, Sweden, was the first to cross the finish line after 200 laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Speedway in Speedway. Check out the top sportsbooks for betting on Motorsports!
Ericsson competes in Chip Ganassi racing. He follows Kenny Brack from Arvika (Sweden), who won the 1999 Indianapolis 500 for A.J. Foyt Enterprises. Ericsson won this race for his third time winning an IndyCar Series. He won the 2021 Detroit Grand Prix and the 2021 Music City Grand Prix at Nashville, Tennessee.
This was Chip Ganassi Racing’s fifth Indianapolis win. Previous winners included Juan Pablo Montoya from Bogota (Colombia) (2000), Scott Dixon, Auckland, New Zealand (2008) and Dario Franchitti, Bathgate, Scotland (2010 & 2012). Dixon finished 21st and had the pole leading to the 2022 Indianapolis 500.
Marcus Ericcson only led 13 laps of the 200. Scott Dixon was the fastest driver in the race, leading 95 laps. However, he was penalized for not slowing down enough to use the pit-road speed limiter on lap 175 on Sunday. Dixon was the man for the entire day until one mistake cost him everything.
It was Dixon’s best performance at the Indianapolis 500. Dixon broke Al Unser Sr.’s lap record of 644 laps on lap 133 to set the record for the Indianapolis 500’s most laps led. Dixon currently holds the record at 665. Dixon seems to be snake-bitten with bad luck at Indy. Check out the best new sportsbooks for betting on Auto Racing!
Ericsson took control of the race until Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR’s legendary driver, crashed with just four laps remaining. Ericsson was a great driver and kept the lead intact, preventing Pato O’Ward from Mexico from passing. On the final lap, Ericsson won. Ericsson won the race after Sage Karam, Pennsylvania crashed.
