The prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, the crown jewel of the F1 Calendar. Miami can try all they want to be like Monaco, or to be the ‘’new’’ Monaco but, as far as fake Marinas, police patrols and NFL inspired podiums go, Miami can keep on dreaming. The street circuit at Monaco is one of the oldest on the calendar, dating back to 1929 with very little changes being made to its iconic layout ever since. The track is known for its tight, twisting corners, 19 of them to be exact, which require extreme precision to navigate as driving a Formula 1 car around here is like balancing on a knife edge. A high downforce set up is required with the drivers navigating their high powered machines millimeters away from the barriers. One small mistake here and those barriers become very unforgiving indeed, with no run off areas whatsoever, a safety car here is very likely, so that’s your first prop bet sorted. Monaco is known amongst fans to be one of the more ‘boring’ races alongside Barcelona, though last weekend’s race at the Circuit de Catalunya produced some surprises and memorable moments. Fact of the matter is, it’s very hard to overtake around here due to the nature of the circuit, it’s narrow and not very high speed like Miami or Saudi Arabia was. That’s why whoever is on pole position is your best bet, as was the case in Barcelona, until Charles had the unfortunate MGU-K issue which caused his retirement. He would have outright won that race. So in Monaco it’s all about qualifying, for me that’s the main event. Still though, this circuit is very mentally demanding on the drivers, they need to remain focused and sharp at all times, the one time you switch off or push too hard, it’s all over. So we have to look at who’s quickest on one lap and for me it’s gotta be the local hero, Charles Leclerc. Last year Charles produced a stonking lap putting his Ferrari on pole for his home race, and Ferrari didn’t have the best car last year. Some say that Max might have eclipsed his pole time of 1:10.346 had Charles not gotten greedy on the throttle out of turns fifteen and sixteen, causing him to crash into the wall in the final minutes of qualifying, automatically ending the session and securing his pole. His luck turned sour the following day when his car didn’t even make it to the grid due to his rear driveshaft being damaged in the collision. That’s not the only time Charles was unlucky at the Monaco Grand Prix, here’s a full list:
As you can see, the only Monegasque driver to race in F1 since Louis Chiron, Andre Testut and Oliver Beretta, has quite a ‘’curse’’ or a dark cloud above his head. Though he is still my personal favorite pick to qualify and win the race. He needs to get another win to swing the championship lead back in his favor, however given the above information, do place your bets with caution.
Likewise, Max will also be looking to extend his championship lead which swung in his favor at Barcelona last weekend. Overall, Max is also very good on one lap though the Red Bull car favors straight line and outright speed rather than slow corners, something which is completely useless around Monaco, he will really have to push hard to extract the most out of that Red Bull, and Max definitely isn’t shy from doing so. Lewis and his team mate George actually fair a decent chance at pole or at least, a podium as Mercedes seem to have come out on top of their issues with the new 2022 car. Lewis put on a fantastic drive in Barcelona, charging through the field after suffering from a puncture on lap one to come from nineteenth position, all the way up to fifth, truly a champions drive. You can never underestimate Lewis, he holds the record for the fastest qualifying lap time around here at 01:10.116 which took him to pole position in 2019, and after last week’s performance which surely must have given him a confidence boost, he must be pumped for this weekend’s Grand Prix. Also on a high is George Russel, after some fantastic defensive driving he ended up finishing third at Barcelona, he also seems to be slightly more comfortable in the Mercedes. It’s to be noted that the silver arrows do seem to be slightly unstable and unpredictable in the really slow corners, though I don’t think they will lose too much time around here.

Apart from the trifecta mentioned above with Charles, Lewis and Max, do look out for Sergio Perez who’s certainly looking to prove a point after last week’s team orders took a potential win away from him. Lando Norris goes well around here, the Mclaren has a decent chassis too, one which Lando manages to extract the most out of, and fighting alongside him will be his former teammate Carlos Sainz, who like Norris, will be looking to replicate last years podium finish, though he still needs to get to grips with his Ferrari.
This will be a spicy one, Leclerc is looking to break his curse and is determined to win his home Grand Prix, Max holds the race lap record here, Lewis the fastest ever lap around Monaco, Perez needs to prove that he’s no number two driver, two old team mates, now rivals face off against each other, also don’t forget your prop bet on a safety car because whilst all that is going on, it’s scheduled to rain in Monaco on Sunday. Nice.
