Ankalaev vs. Guskov Betting Odds

Magomed Ankalaev: -535 Bogdan Guskov: +400

Ankalaev enters the main event as a substantial betting favorite. Depending on the sportsbook, his price has generally ranged from approximately -500 to -535, while Guskov has been listed around +400. Betting lines remain subject to change before the opening bell.

Ankalaev vs. Guskov Prediction & Fight Preview

A pivotal light heavyweight showdown headlines UFC Fight Night as former champion Magomed Ankalaev faces dangerous knockout artist Bogdan Guskov inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Ankalaev was originally scheduled to fight Khalil Rountree Jr., but Rountree withdrew because of an injury. Guskov accepted the five-round assignment on less than two weeks’ notice, transforming an already important main event into the biggest opportunity of his UFC career.

The UFC currently lists Ankalaev as the No. 1-ranked light heavyweight contender and Guskov as the division’s No. 9-ranked challenger. Ankalaev enters with a professional record of 21-2-1 with one no contest, while Guskov carries an 18-3-1 record into his first UFC main event.

For Ankalaev, this fight represents an opportunity to recover from losing the UFC light heavyweight championship to Alex Pereira and reestablish himself as the leading contender in the division.

Ankalaev had gone more than eight years without a defeat before his loss to Pereira ended a 14-fight unbeaten run. He now returns against an opponent with less preparation time but considerably less to lose.

Guskov enters with enormous momentum. Since losing to Volkan Oezdemir in 2023, he has gone unbeaten in five consecutive appearances and has finished each of his UFC victories. His recent run includes stoppage victories over Ryan Spann and Nikita Krylov, followed by a majority draw with former champion Jan Blachowicz.

Stylistically, the matchup presents a fascinating contrast.

Ankalaev is the more disciplined and technically complete fighter. He operates from a southpaw stance, controls distance well and rarely wastes movement. His counterstriking, kicking game, defensive awareness and wrestling background allow him to dictate fights without constantly exposing himself to danger.

Guskov is more aggressive and explosive. Nicknamed “The Czarevitch,” he is at his best when opponents remain in front of him and exchange. He throws with genuine finishing power and has recorded 15 of his professional victories by knockout or technical knockout.

The statistical differences reinforce the stylistic matchup. Ankalaev absorbs approximately 2.59 significant strikes per minute and defends 56 percent of the significant strikes attempted against him. Guskov absorbs approximately 4.09 significant strikes per minute and has a 44 percent significant-strike defense rate.

Guskov lands at a higher pace, averaging 4.57 significant strikes per minute compared with Ankalaev’s 3.65. That aggression makes Guskov dangerous, but it also creates defensive openings that a patient counterstriker can exploit.

The central question is whether Guskov can force Ankalaev into an early firefight before the former champion establishes control.

If Ankalaev maintains distance, mixes in takedowns and forces Guskov to work through extended rounds, his experience should become increasingly important. If Guskov can collapse the pocket and land his right hand before Ankalaev settles into his rhythm, the underdog could produce one of the year’s most significant upsets.

Ankalaev has the skills to win this fight without taking unnecessary risks.

While he possesses significant knockout power, he is generally most effective when controlling distance, forcing opponents to reach and responding with straight punches, kicks and counter combinations. His professional record includes 10 decision victories, demonstrating his ability to manage high-level opponents over extended fights.

Guskov’s durability and offensive power could discourage Ankalaev from becoming overly aggressive. Rather than chasing a finish against a dangerous counterpuncher, Ankalaev can methodically win rounds with cleaner striking, superior defense and occasional takedowns.

A late stoppage remains possible, especially if Guskov fades after accepting the fight on short notice, but an Ankalaev decision is the most logical method-of-victory selection.

Although Guskov is known for producing finishes, Ankalaev rarely gives opponents the clean exchanges they need to create knockouts.

The former champion’s defensive positioning, footwork and ability to alter the location of a fight should help him avoid prolonged brawls. He can also use clinches and takedowns to slow Guskov whenever the underdog begins creating dangerous striking exchanges.

Ankalaev has repeatedly demonstrated that he is comfortable fighting at a measured pace over five rounds. The betting market reflects that possibility, with the over 4.5-round line favored at approximately -128.

The most significant concern is Guskov’s short-notice preparation. If his conditioning deteriorates, Ankalaev may find a late finish. Nevertheless, Ankalaev’s patient approach gives the fight a strong chance of reaching the judges.

Prop Bet #3: Magomed Ankalaev Over 0.5 Takedowns

Ankalaev does not always rely heavily on wrestling, but the threat of a takedown is an important component of his game.

The over 0.5 takedowns prop has been offered around -150, requiring Ankalaev to complete only one takedown during a five-round contest.

A takedown would make tactical sense against Guskov. The underdog is most dangerous when he can plant his feet and throw combinations. Forcing Guskov to defend wrestling would interrupt his offensive rhythm, drain his energy and make him more hesitant to commit to powerful punches.

Ankalaev does not need to dominate the entire fight on the ground for this wager to cash. One successful reactive takedown, body-lock trip or strategically timed level change would be enough.

Guskov by knockout represents the strongest long-shot alternative.

Attempting to outpoint Ankalaev over five rounds is an extremely difficult assignment. Guskov’s clearest path to victory is to increase the pressure, force Ankalaev toward the fence and create a violent exchange during the opening rounds.

Fifteen of Guskov’s 18 professional victories have come by knockout or technical knockout. He has finished every opponent he has defeated inside the UFC, confirming that his power remains effective against ranked competition.

Guskov accepted the fight on short notice and has little incentive to compete cautiously. He must recognize that his opportunity becomes less favorable as the rounds progress and Ankalaev begins collecting information.

The underdog moneyline is attractive, but Guskov’s knockout prop more accurately represents how he is likely to win.

Keys to Victory

Magomed Ankalaev

  • Maintain control of the fighting distance.
  • Avoid unnecessary exchanges during the opening round.
  • Attack Guskov’s body and lead leg.
  • Use straight left hands when Guskov moves forward.
  • Mix in takedowns to disrupt the underdog’s striking rhythm.
  • Force Guskov to carry his weight in clinch positions.
  • Increase the pace after Guskov’s short-notice conditioning is tested.

Bogdan Guskov

  • Apply pressure before Ankalaev establishes his rhythm.
  • Cut off the cage instead of following Ankalaev.
  • Target Ankalaev’s body to reduce his movement.
  • Make Ankalaev fight while moving backward.
  • Defend the first takedown attempt and return immediately to offense.
  • Avoid loading up on one knockout punch.
  • Create damaging exchanges within the first two rounds.

The Matchup Context: Former Champion vs. Dangerous Replacement

This fight carries substantial consequences for both competitors.

Ankalaev enters as the division’s No. 1 contender and a former champion attempting to prove that his loss to Pereira was a temporary setback rather than the beginning of a decline. A convincing victory would reinforce his position near the front of the light heavyweight championship picture.

However, Ankalaev also faces considerable pressure.

He is a massive betting favorite competing against an opponent who accepted the fight on short notice. Anything less than a convincing performance could create questions about his ability to regain the championship.

For Guskov, the circumstances are completely different.

He was preparing for a rematch with Jan Blachowicz when the opportunity to headline against Ankalaev became available. Rather than waiting for his original matchup, Guskov accepted the chance to face the division’s top-ranked contender.

A victory would instantly transform Guskov from a dangerous ranked finisher into a legitimate championship contender. Even a strong performance in defeat could elevate his reputation because of the difficult circumstances surrounding the matchup.

Ankalaev carries the burden of expectation. Guskov carries the freedom of an underdog with almost nothing to lose.

That psychological difference could make the opening rounds especially dangerous for the favorite.

Fighters to Watch

Magomed Ankalaev: The former champion remains one of the light heavyweight division’s most technically skilled competitors. His counterstriking, defense, patience and wrestling experience make him a difficult stylistic puzzle for any opponent.

Bogdan Guskov: One of the division’s most dangerous knockout artists, Guskov enters his first UFC main event with legitimate finishing power and considerable momentum. His willingness to accept a five-round fight on short notice demonstrates the confidence surrounding his current run.

Steve Erceg: The former flyweight title challenger faces Ramazan Temirov in the co-main event. Both fighters officially weighed 126 pounds, setting up an important contest in the UFC’s flyweight division.

The Abu Dhabi Crowd: Etihad Arena has become one of the UFC’s most recognizable international destinations. The early American start time corresponds with a prime-time event in Abu Dhabi, creating an international showcase for two leading light heavyweights.

The Verdict

Prediction: Magomed Ankalaev by Unanimous Decision

Best Bet: Magomed Ankalaev by Decision

Best Supporting Prop: Ankalaev Over 0.5 Takedowns

Long-Shot Bet: Bogdan Guskov by KO or TKO

Guskov presents a legitimate threat because of his power, aggression and willingness to accept dangerous exchanges. The short-notice challenger should be most competitive during the opening two rounds, when his explosiveness and confidence are at their highest.

Expect Guskov to move forward aggressively, targeting Ankalaev with heavy hooks and overhand rights. He may have isolated moments of success, particularly if Ankalaev remains near the fence for too long.

However, Ankalaev is too defensively responsible to willingly participate in the type of fight Guskov needs.

The former champion should use his footwork to remain outside Guskov’s preferred punching range, land straight counterpunches and punish the underdog’s forward movement with body kicks. Occasional takedowns should further disrupt Guskov’s rhythm while forcing him to expend valuable energy.

As Guskov begins to slow, Ankalaev should take increasingly firm control of the contest.

Guskov’s power will prevent Ankalaev from becoming reckless enough to pursue an unnecessary finish, but the favorite’s cleaner striking, defensive efficiency and tactical variety should produce a comfortable advantage on the scorecards.

A competitive opening gives way to a controlled second half as Ankalaev earns a unanimous-decision victory, rebounds from losing his championship and reestablishes himself as one of the leading contenders in the UFC light heavyweight division.
