UFC 279 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, September 10th.
The news was reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who stated that Chimaev and Diaz had verbally agreed to the report with both fighters’ agents and Hunter Campbell, the UFC Chief Business Officer.
Okamoto, through Diaz’s management, said that this fight was one Diaz had been asking for since April. Meanwhile, Chimaev made a statement through his representatives saying “I am going handle Nate Diaz’s funeral with UFC.” Check out the top new bookmakers for betting on UFC!
Diaz, who has been with the UFC from 2007 to the present, was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5. According to some reports, this fight with Chimaev may be the final fight for Diaz in UFC.
In the past six years, Diaz has only fought three times. After a three-year absence, Diaz returned to fight in 2019 with a dominant victory over Anthony Pettis. This set him up for a highly-anticipated main event bout at Madison Square Garden with Jorge Masvidal later that year. After just three rounds, Diaz lost to Masvidal via a doctor’s stoppage.
Diaz would not be returning to the UFC Octagon until 2021. Although he was originally scheduled to face Leon Edwards in May last year, that was moved to June after Diaz sustained a minor injury. Edwards won the five-round fight by decision at UFC 263 after the meeting.
According to current betting odds, Nate Diaz is only 5% likely to defeat Khmazat Chimaev in September’s UFC 279 event. Diaz was dominated for most of his fight against Leon Edwards. Edwards was hurt badly by Diaz’s combination in the fifth round. Many observers noted that Diaz could have won the fight if he had chosen to challenge Edwards rather than taunting him.
Khamzat Chimiev faced Gilbert Burns, a former UFC welterweight champion, at UFC 273 in April. While the Swedish MMA phenom won the fight, he had to overcome adversity. Chimaev suffered significant injuries and was injured numerous times during this fight for the first time in his UFC professional career.
Although Chimaev overcame Burns’ strong challenge, it is well known that Nate Diaz is past his prime. This is why many bookmakers have given Diaz very little to no chance to win what would be one the most significant upsets in the history of the sport.
