Nurmagomedov vs. Colgan Betting Odds

Usman Nurmagomedov: Not yet widely available

Archie Colgan: Not yet widely available

As of July 27, several major fight listings had not posted a verified moneyline for the championship matchup. Current odds pages were still displaying the market as unavailable, meaning bettors should wait for sportsbooks to establish a stable line before placing wagers.

Nurmagomedov is expected to open as the favorite because of his championship experience, undefeated record and victories over established international competition. However, Colgan’s perfect record and elite wrestling background should prevent the line from reaching the extreme prices often attached to dominant champions facing less experienced challengers.

All betting lines and prop markets remain subject to change before the opening bell.

Nurmagomedov vs. Colgan Prediction & Fight Preview

Two undefeated lightweights collide for the PFL Lightweight World Championship when reigning champion Usman Nurmagomedov defends his title against unbeaten American contender Archie “King” Colgan at UBS Arena.

The main event represents one of the most compelling championship matchups the PFL can currently produce. Nurmagomedov enters with a 21-0 professional record, while Colgan arrives at 13-0. One fighter will leave New York with the championship and an undefeated record. The other will experience the first official defeat of his professional career.

Nurmagomedov has established himself as the standard of the PFL lightweight division. The promotion currently recognizes him as its top pound-for-pound fighter, and his combination of striking, wrestling, submission grappling and tactical intelligence has allowed him to control opponents in nearly every area of competition.

The champion most recently defended his title against Alfie Davis at PFL Dubai in February. Nurmagomedov controlled the striking exchanges before taking Davis to the ground and securing a technical submission with an arm-triangle choke. The victory improved his record to 21-0 and demonstrated that he remains capable of producing a finish deep into a championship fight.

Before defeating Davis, Nurmagomedov recorded consecutive victories over Paul Hughes. Those competitive fights forced him to operate under pressure, adjust strategically and maintain his composure across championship rounds.

Colgan presents a different type of challenge.

The Colorado-based contender does not possess the same international recognition as Hughes or Davis, but he may be the most accomplished traditional wrestler Nurmagomedov has encountered in professional MMA.

Colgan was a Big 12 champion at the University of Wyoming, qualified twice for the NCAA Wrestling Championships and completed his collegiate career with 112 victories. He transitioned those credentials successfully into MMA, winning his first 13 professional contests and earning the PFL’s No. 3 lightweight ranking.

The challenger has also demonstrated that he can apply his wrestling against experienced mixed martial artists rather than simply relying on his amateur accomplishments.

Colgan defeated Mansour Barnaoui by decision in his PFL debut before controlling Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Jay-Jay Wilson over three rounds. Against Wilson, Colgan repeatedly completed takedowns, maintained pressure against the SmartCage and prevented a dangerous submission specialist from establishing favorable positions.

That victory improved Colgan’s PFL record to 2-0 and his overall record to 13-0.

Stylistically, this championship fight presents a fascinating question: What happens when an elite American collegiate wrestler attempts to impose his game on one of MMA’s most complete Dagestani champions?

Nurmagomedov is often associated with the relentless wrestling style made famous by his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he is far more than a pressure grappler.

The champion is an excellent long-range striker who uses kicks from both sides, straight punches, feints and constant changes in rhythm. He can attack the body and legs without recklessly exposing himself, forcing opponents to defend multiple weapons before he attempts a takedown.

Nurmagomedov’s ability to blend his techniques may be his greatest advantage.

He does not announce when he is transitioning from striking to wrestling. A body kick can become a level change. A punching combination can force an opponent toward the fence. A defensive scramble can quickly become a submission opportunity.

Colgan’s approach is more direct.

He wants to close the distance, establish contact and force his opponent to carry his weight. He is comfortable completing repeated takedowns rather than depending on one perfect entry. Even when opponents return to their feet, Colgan remains attached and searches for another mat return.

The challenger’s physical strength and conditioning allow him to sustain that pressure across three-round fights. The unanswered question is whether he can maintain the same pace during his first five-round championship assignment.

Colgan must also deal with a more varied striking attack than he has faced in his previous appearances.

If he remains at kicking distance, Nurmagomedov can attack his lead leg, body and head. If Colgan rushes forward without preparing his entry, the champion can intercept him with knees, straight punches or counters.

Colgan’s wrestling may still be effective enough to create competitive rounds.

Nurmagomedov has faced talented grapplers, but few opponents have brought Colgan’s combination of Division I credentials, physical strength and commitment to chain wrestling. The American does not necessarily need to dominate the champion on the ground. Even brief takedowns and prolonged clinch exchanges could prevent Nurmagomedov from developing his preferred striking rhythm.

The central question is whether Colgan can turn the fight into a physically exhausting wrestling contest without exposing his neck, back or arms during the transitions.

Nurmagomedov is extremely dangerous when opponents become overly determined to complete takedowns. He can reverse positions, attack submissions or separate and punish them with strikes.

If Colgan can consistently move the champion backward and control him against the SmartCage, the challenger could create a much closer fight than expected.

If Nurmagomedov establishes distance and forces Colgan to shoot from too far away, the champion’s striking and submission threats should gradually take control.

Nurmagomedov has the skills to defeat Colgan without taking unnecessary risks.

Colgan’s wrestling background and physical strength should make him difficult to dominate on the ground during the opening rounds. The challenger has also shown durability and composure while competing against experienced opponents.

Instead of forcing submissions against a strong positional wrestler, Nurmagomedov can use his kicks, movement and straight punches to accumulate damage while making Colgan work for every takedown attempt.

The champion’s experience in five-round fights should become increasingly important during the second half of the contest. He understands how to manage his energy, win minutes and make adjustments without abandoning his game plan.

A submission remains possible if Colgan begins taking desperate shots, but a controlled Nurmagomedov decision is the most logical method-of-victory selection.

Both fighters are undefeated partly because they rarely place themselves in unnecessarily dangerous positions.

Nurmagomedov has finishing ability, but he is comfortable winning a disciplined championship fight. He does not need to pursue a reckless knockout when he can control distance, defend takedowns and accumulate cleaner offense.

Colgan’s wrestling could also reduce the number of extended striking exchanges. Even if he cannot maintain top position, his takedown attempts and clinch pressure can consume significant portions of a round.

The risk is that Colgan becomes fatigued during the championship rounds and leaves an opening for a Nurmagomedov submission.

Nevertheless, Colgan’s strength, positional awareness and cautious approach against elite opponents give the fight a realistic chance of reaching the judges.

Colgan’s most realistic path to victory requires him to wrestle.

The challenger is unlikely to spend 25 minutes attempting to outstrike Nurmagomedov from long range. He should pressure forward, force clinch exchanges and repeatedly attack the champion’s hips and legs.

Colgan does not need to maintain control for an extended period for this wager to succeed. One completed double-leg, body-lock trip or mat return would be enough to cash an over 0.5 takedowns prop.

Nurmagomedov’s balance and defensive grappling make every attempt difficult, but Colgan should have numerous opportunities during a five-round contest.

The price will determine the value. If sportsbooks attach an extreme favorite’s price to the prop, bettors should avoid overpaying.

Colgan by decision represents the most logical long-shot alternative.

The challenger’s clearest route to an upset is not attempting to win a technical kickboxing match. He must turn the contest into a grinding battle built around takedowns, fence control and positional pressure.

Colgan can win rounds by forcing Nurmagomedov backward, limiting the champion’s kicking game and controlling extended portions of the fight against the SmartCage.

Defeating Nurmagomedov over five rounds remains an extremely difficult assignment. However, if the challenger wins, a wrestling-based decision is more likely than a sudden knockout or submission.

Bettors interested in the underdog should compare Colgan’s decision price with his moneyline before making a selection.

Keys to Victory

Usman Nurmagomedov

  • Control the center of the SmartCage.
  • Attack Colgan’s lead leg and body from kicking distance.
  • Avoid allowing Colgan to establish connected hands around his hips.
  • Force the challenger to shoot takedowns from outside effective range.
  • Use knees and uppercuts when Colgan changes levels.
  • Remain patient if the early rounds are competitive.
  • Attack submissions when Colgan becomes tired during transitions.
  • Increase the striking pace during the championship rounds.

Archie Colgan

  • Pressure Nurmagomedov before the champion establishes his kicking rhythm.
  • Cut off the SmartCage instead of following the champion.
  • Use punches to disguise his takedown entries.
  • Connect multiple wrestling attempts together.
  • Keep his head protected during level changes.
  • Avoid leaving his neck exposed while completing mat returns.
  • Force Nurmagomedov to carry his weight against the fence.
  • Maintain enough energy to wrestle throughout rounds four and five.

The Matchup Context: Champion vs. Undefeated Challenger

This championship fight carries enormous consequences for both lightweights.

Nurmagomedov enters as the unbeaten champion and the PFL’s top pound-for-pound fighter. He has already defeated former champions, tournament winners and highly regarded international contenders. Another victory would strengthen his argument as one of the best lightweights competing outside the UFC.

However, the champion also carries the burden of expectation.

Colgan is relatively unknown to casual MMA audiences, meaning Nurmagomedov is expected not only to win but to demonstrate a clear technical advantage. A difficult or controversial victory could create questions about how the champion handles an elite American wrestler.

For Colgan, the fight represents an opportunity to transform his career in one night.

He enters with an undefeated record and outstanding wrestling credentials, but he has never fought someone with Nurmagomedov’s championship experience or complete skill set.

A victory would immediately make Colgan the PFL lightweight champion and establish him as one of the leading 155-pound fighters in the world.

Even a competitive defeat could elevate his reputation. If Colgan forces Nurmagomedov into a difficult five-round fight, he will prove that his wrestling can challenge the highest level of the division.

Nurmagomedov is fighting to maintain the standard he has established.

Colgan is fighting to prove that his championship level has arrived.

Fighters to Watch

Usman Nurmagomedov: The undefeated lightweight champion combines precise kicking, intelligent movement, wrestling and dangerous submission grappling. His ability to remain composed while changing strategies makes him one of MMA’s most difficult fighters to prepare for.

Archie Colgan: The undefeated challenger enters with elite collegiate wrestling credentials and a professional style built around pressure, repeated takedowns and physical control. This is his opportunity to prove that his wrestling can succeed against a complete world champion.

Dakota Ditcheva: The undefeated former PFL tournament winner returns in the co-main event against Denise Kielholtz. Ditcheva carries a 15-0 record but has been sidelined while recovering from hand injuries, making her return one of the most anticipated moments on the card.

Denise Kielholtz: A dangerous and experienced striker, Kielholtz enters on a three-fight winning streak. Her kickboxing background and willingness to exchange should provide an important test for Ditcheva after the undefeated contender’s extended absence.

Dovlet Yagshimuradov vs. Simeon Powell: This light heavyweight matchup features an experienced championship-level competitor against a younger contender attempting to earn the biggest victory of his career.

The Verdict

Prediction: Usman Nurmagomedov by Unanimous Decision

Best Bet: Usman Nurmagomedov by Decision

Best Supporting Prop: Fight Goes the Distance

Long-Shot Bet: Archie Colgan by Decision

Colgan represents a legitimate threat because of his wrestling pedigree, physical strength and willingness to maintain pressure.

Expect the challenger to move forward immediately, attempting to prevent Nurmagomedov from controlling the center and establishing his kicking game. Colgan should attack takedowns along the fence and force the champion to work through prolonged clinch exchanges.

He may experience success during the opening rounds.

Nurmagomedov has not regularly faced opponents with Colgan’s exact combination of collegiate wrestling accomplishments and professional experience. The champion may need time to determine which strikes and movements produce the safest openings.

However, Nurmagomedov possesses more ways to win.

He is the more creative striker, the more dangerous submission grappler and the more experienced five-round competitor. His ability to attack at multiple distances should force Colgan to expend considerable energy while attempting to close the distance.

As the fight progresses, Nurmagomedov should begin recognizing Colgan’s preferred entries.

The champion can punish those attempts with knees, uppercuts and short combinations before circling away. When Colgan succeeds in creating a scramble, Nurmagomedov’s grappling awareness should prevent the challenger from maintaining dominant positions for extended periods.

Colgan’s wrestling and durability should keep him competitive enough to avoid being overwhelmed. He may complete takedowns and win portions of rounds by controlling the champion near the SmartCage.

The difference will be Nurmagomedov’s efficiency.

The champion should land the cleaner strikes, create the more threatening grappling positions and finish rounds more effectively. Colgan will make him work, but the challenger’s offense may require significantly more energy to produce fewer damaging moments.

Expect a competitive championship fight that demonstrates why both lightweights entered New York undefeated.

Colgan pushes Nurmagomedov through difficult wrestling exchanges, but the champion’s striking variety, submission awareness and five-round experience allow him to retain the PFL Lightweight World Championship by unanimous decision.
